PATENT O EIoE.
THOMAS MANCHESTER FARRAND, OF S KOWHEGAN, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING 0R TUCK-LAYING DEVICES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,044, dated Maj 23, 1871..
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MANcnEsrEn FARRAND, of Skowhegan, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Folder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding attachments for sewing-machines; and it consists in the arrangement of guiding and folding plates, hereinafter described, for folding tucks and shirt-bosoms, and the like.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the apparatus arranged for folding bosoms. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same and Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line or ."v. Fig. 1 is a plan view of a modification of the apparatus arranged for folding tucks; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a plate of brass or other sheet metal having a slot, B, near one end for attaching to the table of the machine, in front of the needle, by a clamp-screw, O. The said plate also has a ledge, D, which is provided for gaging the cloth at the fold. From this point the plate is extended to the left, as at A, for a considerable distance, and bent over backward so that the end E, which is made thinner than the other part, terminates a short distance in front of the ledge D. P is a short plate fitted on the top of plate A at the right of the ledge, and clamped thereon by the screw G passing through a slot. This plate projects beyond the ledge D to the left, more or less, as required, over the end of E. F is a short slotted plate with a turned-up end, M, which is attached to the upper side of the part E of plate A, so that the said upward-projecting part will extend under the left-hand end of plate P toward the ledge D about as far as the width of the required tuck. It is clamped to part E by a set-screw, N, passing through a slot, whereby it may be adjusted.
5 The parts thus constructed and arranged are employed for tucking the cloth, which is passed between the parts A E, folded back over E to the left, and out between F and P, the ledge D being placed to the right of the needle about as far as the width of the required tuck, the end M of plate F about the same distance to the left, and the end I of plate F as much beyond the end M to the left.-
The plate P is to be used with A and F, as in Figs. 3 and 4, for folding shirt-bosoms, by clamping the thick part upon the upper side ofpart E of plate A, with the projecting end P'extending over end' M of plate F, so that the shoulder Q, on the under side, serves for one of the folds of the cloth to run against, the part P projecting a sufficient distance above the plate F to allow the cloth to run between them freely.
In folding bosoms the cloth, as before, is passed between A and E, folded at ledge D back over E to the shoulder Q of plate I thence it is folded back over point M between P and F, and out to the right beyond the needle, as clearly shown, which makes a fold the same as in a common shirt-bosom. In this case the clamp-screw G is transferred to the place of screw N, and the latter to the place of screw G, for the said screw N does not interfere with the passing of the goods over it as much as screw Gr would. In either case the folds may be made wide or narrow, as desired, by properly adjusting the plates.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The slotted plate A having ledge D, exten- I sion A, and thin end E, the plate F having hook M, and the slotted plate P having shoulder Q, all combined, constructed, and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
THOMAS MANCHESTER FARRAND.
