ANDREW sanronnjor; NEWARK; omo, Assrcnon rro a. H. HEIsEY a COMPANY, or
1T@ all fwhom 'it may concern;
Be it known thatI, ANDREW J. Sanronn,
acitizen of the United States, and resident of Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare' the following to be afull, clear, 7and' exact description thereof.
z My invention relates to lamps, and .more especially to a. lamp in which an .electric llght 1s' employed,
The object of the invention isto provide alamp in which the column portion is made of glass with a passageway ext-ending through it for the passage of the electric '1ight-cord, with means at the upper end of if said column for holding securelyin position .thereon an outwardly Haring glass member adapted to support the shade; the socket for the electric bulb acting to hold the glass 4member securely in ,position on the column whereby a very neat and strong construction is'obtained and one 1n which the parts are not liable to work loose.
;. further object of: my invention is to provide a simple means ,for suspending prisms rom the glass member which give a pleas- Aingefiect to the lamp.'
y In the accompanylng .drawing,Figure 1 '30 .is averticalsection of my improved lamp; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detall.
-In the drawing, the numeral 2 designates .the column formed of the glass with the pas sage-way 3 extending through it for the passage of the electric light cord 4, said cord entering the' base 5 through the opening 6. The upper end of the column is provided with the shoulder 7 and the threaded neck portion 8.A A thimble 9 is threaded internally and engages the threaded neck 3 of the column. This thimble 9 has the threaded neck 10 with the opening 11 through which the cord 4 passes. The flaring shade supporting member 12 rests upon the shoul- 4.5. the inside shoulder 13 upon which lthe plate der 7 of the column 2, and said member has i or washer 14 rests. e The shoulder 13 is so lo- -jcated .that when the washer 14 rests thereon,
f.- thimble 9. The-lamp socket 16 has the there is a space between the lowertace of said washer and the upper face of the threaded extension 17 which engages the ,threaded neck 10 of the thimble 9, and said extensionbears against the" washer 14 and g Specification of LettersPatent. v Iltllied ug. 17, 1191-5. vided `with the opening 1'8 through which` the chain 19 passes, which operates the switch in the lamp socket. The shade supporting member 12 is provided with the seat -20 and theflange 20a, said seat forming the support for the shade 21; the flange 22 of saidshade fitting up close to the flange 2O of the shade supporting member. Countersunk openings 25 are formed in the flat rim portion 24 of the shade supporting member, and eyelets 26 inserted in said openings, said eyelets being formed of wire with the head 27 riveted thereto. The wire Jfrom which the eyelets are formed is inserted in the openings -25 with the heads 27 resting therein, whereupon the wire is bent around in circular form to form the eye to support the prisms 28.
By my invention, I provide a very simple and eflicient means for holding the shade supporting member securely in position to prevent rattling and looseness, and while at the same time the parts may be readily disconnected for therpurpose of cleaning, the whole forms a very neat and attractive appearance. That I claim is: e
1. In a lamp, the combination of a hollow column, having a shoulder at the upper end, a threaded neck portion on said column, a
thimble engaging said neck portion, said thimble havinga threaded neck portion, a shade supporting member 4resting on the shoulder of said column, and encircling said portion, a shade supporting.; member resting on the shnnlder of saidfcolumn, a retaining In testimony WhereofilIi-f-'izhe said ANDREW member engaging the inside of said shade J.
