Description

L. 1. Arwoon.
Patented July I6, 1872.
ffzmzzf @m' m/m6 Lamp.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEwIs J. ATWooD, 0E WATEEBUEY, CONNECTICUT, AssICNoR To PLUME AND ATwooD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CE sAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,509, dated July 1 6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs J. ATwooD, of Waterbury, in the county of N ew Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamps; and the following is declared to be a correct description of the same.
This lamp is made with a frame for hplding the chimney in place, and furnishing means for hanging the lamp upon a nail or hook, and also for carrying the lamp by handles. The frame is made of a wire attached at its lower.
end to the reservoir, and`formingat .itsupperA end a loop by which to hang up the lamp. The handles are attached by a sheet-metal sleeve surrounding the wires of the frame, and also carrying a wire and a spring that act to confine a perforated cap to the top of the chimney and hold the same in place.
In the drawing, Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a rear view, of my said lamp.
The base ofthe lamp is made of the reservoir a, upon which is the burner b, which may be of any suitable construction. I prefer and have shown a burner similar in its general features to that in the patent No. 73,599, of 1868, ask the cylindrical air-distributer d can be slipped down for trimming or lighting without removing the glass chimneyr f. The wire frame passes around the reservoir a at h, and then .extends vertically at l, and the upper end forms a suspending-loop, m. rllhe sleeve n connects the wires l of this frame, and also serves to hold the wire handles i', that may be either grasped or turned back out of the way in hanging up the lamp by the loop m. The sleeve n also forms a case for a helical spring, s, that surrounds the wire t, sliding through said case, and receiving the perforated chimney-cap u, so that said cap is pressed upon the top of the chimney to hold the same in place; but the spring yields when the chimney is lifted for removal or replaced. The guide-band o, attached to the lower end of the wire t, surrounds the Wires] of the frame, and slides upon them when the chimney-cap is raised or lowered. The sleeve n carries a hook, o, for the reector fw.
This lamp is very convenient on account of its safety and portability; and it is especially adapted to the ordinary uses in a family.
I claim as my invention- 1. The wire frame Zattached at the lower part to the reservoir, and forming at its upper end a suspending loop, in combination with the sleeve n and handles r, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The wire t, carrying the chimney-cap u, in combination with the spring s, sleeve n, frame l, and handles l", substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The glass chimney, sustained near the upper end by a metallic support, and resting at the lower end in a chimney-holder, in combination with a sliding air-distributer that gives access to the wick for trimming or lighting without removing the chimney, substantially as set forth.
4. The sleeve u, sustained by the wire frame Z, and provided with the hook o to receive the reflector w, substantially as set forth.
