CHAIN saw.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE E. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Clarke and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invensuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to chain saws; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the pivoted toothed links hereinafter fully described and claimed, the saw being specially adapted for use in cutting green timber.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a chain saw constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of one of the center links. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a cross-section through the saw, taken on the line w-m in Fig. 1, and showing also the carrier blade. Fig. 6 is a side view of a portion of the chain saw, showing a modification.
The chain saw is formed of side links 2 arranged in pairs, and center links 8 which are pivoted to the side links, and it is operated by a chain sawing machine of any approved construction. The side links 2 are all alike, except that their cutting teeth 4 are formed right and left, and they are arranged in pairs. All the side links have cutting teeth 4 which project upwardly. These cutting teeth areof any approved shape, and they are set laterally in any approved manner. The dotted lines in Fig. 1 indicate the bottomsof the beveled cutting portions of the cutting teeth in the form shown, which is found to be advantageous. The lower parts of the side links 2 have driving projections 5. engage with the teeth of the sprocket wheel, or other driving device, by means of which longitudinal motion is imparted to the chain saw, and they are of any convenient shape. In the form shown the projections have inclined ends, which are inclined in opposite directions, and they extend for the full length of the links. These projections 5 provide a very powerful drive for the saw, and one which greatly reduces its chance of slipping, and which does not wear away the sprocket wheels rapidly. 6, shown in Fig. 5, has a central rib 7 which is straddled by the projections 5, instead of having a central groove, as when the drivlng projections are formed on the center links in the usual way.
The center links 8 are all alike, and they are pivoted to the side links by pins 9. Each center link has a drag tooth or planer tooth 10 which projects upwardly and forwardly into the space in front of one pair of-cutting teeth; and a gage tooth 12 which proects upwardly and rearwardly into the space behind the said pair of cutting teeth. The end 14 of the gage tooth is beveled, and it is arranged a little in front of and below the point of the next following drag tooth.
The drag teeth are wider than the gage teeth, and they have laterally projecting side portions 15 on their shanks and on the front portions of the links 8. These portions 15 form stops which bear against the front portions 16 of the cutting teeth and against the rear end portions 17 of the side links 2. These parts 16 and 17 form stops which hold the center and side links in line and permit them to bend in one direction so as to pass over the sprocket wheel s. These stops may be formed in various ways in carrying out this invention, and in the modification shown in Fig. 6, a stop shoulder 27 is formed on the side link which engages with a projection on the center link over its pivot in, and has a similar action to the stop 1 which is beveled or inclined so that it overlaps the stop on the center link, and which is less expensive to construct.
The center links 8 have also cams or projections 18 on their front ends, and lugs 20 which project downwardly and rearwardly from the shanks of the gage teeth. The lug 20 of one link rests on the cam 18 of the next following link, and when the saw bends upwardly that they rise more quickly than the drag teeth. This reduces the hold of the drag teeth upon the bottom of the saw cut, and thereby prevents. the drag teeth from digging into the timber. The portion of metal which connects each gage tooth with the main portion of the center link to which it pertains, and which lies between one pair of cutting teeth and forms an extension of the said center link, is of great utility in preserving the alinement of the cutting teeth while at work, and it also prevents saw-dustthe cams ralse the gage teeth so.

tions for driving them from sprocket wheels shaped to engage with such projections or indentations.
What I claim is:
1. In a chain saw, the combination, with side links provided with cutting teeth arranged in pairs, of center links pivoted between the side links, each center link being provided with a drag tooth which projects forwardly of one pair of cutting teeth and having also a gage tooth which projects rearwardly of the said pair of cutting teeth.
2. In a chain saw, the combination, with two side links provided with a pair of cutcenter link having its rear end portion pivoted to the front end portions of the side links, said center link having a drag tooth which projects forwardly of the said cutting teeth and a gage tooth which projects rearwardly of the said out- 3. In a chain saw, the combination, with side links provided with pairsof cutting teeth, of center links pivoted between the center link having a drag tooth which projects forwardly of one pair of cutting teeth and having also a gage tooth which projects rearwardly of the said pair of cutting teeth and having also a lug which projects from its rear part and bears on the front end portion of the next following center link.
4:. In a chain saw, the combination, with two side links provided with a pair of cut-' ting teeth, of a center link pivoted to the rear end portions of the side links and provided with a cam which projects in front of its pivot and having also a forwardly projecting drag tooth, and a center link pivoted to the front end portions of the side links and having a gage tooth which projects rearwardly of the said cutting teeth, and having also a lug on its rear part which rests on the said cam and which is raised by it, to check the cut of the said drag tooth, when the saw bends upwardly.
5. Ina chain saw, the combination, with two side links provided with a pair of cutting teeth, of a center link pivoted to the front end portions of the side links and protooth which projects forwardly' of the said cutting teeth and which drive wheels with a drag tooth which of the center link and ting teeth and adajacent .two side links provided with a pair of cutting teeth, of a center link having its rear end portion pivoted to the front end portions of the said side links and provided projects forwardly of the said cutting teeth, said center link and drag tooth having laterally projecting front and rear stop portions the latter of which bear against the front end portions or shanks of the said cutting teeth, and two side links pivoted to the front end portion provided with stops which engage with the frontfitop portions of the center link.
7. In a chain saw, the combination, with side links provided with a pair of cutting teeth, of a rear center link pivoted between the rear end portions of the side links, and a front center link pivoted between the front end portions of the side links and provided with an extension which bridges the space between the center links and which rests on the rear center link.

In a chain saw, the combination, with side links having cutting teeth arranged in pairs, of center links pivoted between the side links, each center link being provided with a drag tooth which projects forwardly of one pair of cutting teeth, each center link being also provided with an extension which projects rearwardly between one pair of cutting teeth and bridges the space between two center links and which has a gage tooth arranged to the rear of the said pair of cut to thefsaid drag tooth.
9. In a chain saw, center links having laterally pro ecting stops, said stops being arranged at their front end portions and behind their front pivots, of side links arranged in pairs and pivoted to the center with projectionson their lower sides, for engaging with the driving device, said projections having straight and upwardly inclined rear ends the top portions of which J.
