A saw chain comprises a plurality of pivotally joined links assembled in sequence, each sequence including a plurality of side links and a plurality of centre links, each link including a body portion, some of the centre links 16 having a raker tooth 16b extending from the body portion in a direction opposite a root portion 16a, paired side cutters 17c spaced from the raker tooth, and a depth gauge 11c, 12c formed on a side link immediately forward of each raker tooth and each pair of side cutters, the depth gauge being positioned along the longitudinal centre line of the chain. The centre links 16 and 17 are spaced apart by further centre links 15 and all the centre links have root portions 15a, 16a, 17a for engaging the teeth of a drive sprocket. The centre links are pivotally connected to side links 13, some 11, 12 of which are disposed immediately in advance of the centre teeth 16, 17 and formed with the depth gauges 11c, 12c which are bent out of the plane of the side links into the centre plane of the chains and may be disposed intermediate the length of the side links or towards one end. The raker teeth 16b on the centre links 16 may be T-shaped and extend further to one side than the other or extend an equal amount on both sides; alternately, the raker teeth may have an inverted L-shape. The centre links 17 may have U-shaped portions 17b forming the pairs of side cutters 17c, Fig. 5. In another embodiment, the side cutters are formed as integral parts of opposite side links while in a further embodiment, the side cutters are formed by V- shaped portions 22, Fig. 11, of the centre links, the top edges of the legs of the portions being bevelled, 26, 27.
