side
This invention relates to chain saws adapted. for use on portable and other sawing machines for cutting green Wood and growingtrees; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Zn the drawings, Figure l is a side view a portions of a .chain saw constructed acg to this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar one row of side links and cutoved, the outline of the hidden ot-ting teeth of the other enown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is plan new of the portions of the chain saw shown in Fig.1. Fig. 1 is a cross-section, taken on the line 13*12 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 side view of portions of a chain saw Wit i some side linksremoved, and showing a modification in which the cutting teeth are formed on adjacent pairs of side links, and the gage teeth are formed in sections.
The chain saw is adapted to he. supported on a frame or savv ing machine of any approved construction, and it may be driven by hand or by power in any approved Way.
in the preferred form of the saw two kinds of side links 2 and 3 are provided, and are arranged in pairs alternately of each other. The side links 2 are connecting and supporting links, and-they are not provided with cutting teeth The side links 3 have ting teeth 5 these cutting teeth prev? 1, y project .Lorvvardly over the front end of the links to which they pertain. The cnt= ting teeth are made in various shapes or curves in carrying out this invention. The
pin
1 l ill front portions 4: of the shanks of the cutting teeth are curved and they rest against the upper rear end portions 0:1? the connecting links 2.
Each side link, 2 and 3, has an inclined. projection 6 atjts rear end, which overlaps an inclined projection 7 on the front end or the next adjacent link and prevents the from bending in one direction.
Two kinds of center links 8 and? are p'rovided, and they are arranged, alternately. The center links 8 are provided with for- Wardly pro ecting drag teeth or planer teeth 12, the side portions 1% or which are wider than the links 8 so that they forin stops which rest on the tops of the connecting side Links 2.
The drag teeth links 8 ere pivot front end port one oi the connect linksQ. andto the side links 3, by P1" teeth are hook-shah Wardly and upwardly incli ed sh;v
The center links 9 ovided vv' teeth 17. The center the rear end portions of the connecting side links 2, and to the front end portions of the side links 3, by pins 18. The gage teeth 17 I over each end of their ardlv and rear e front end porare curved and nd their shanks. oi the gage -i the front g teeth 5, at
the drag or The front and and poini the hottcrn of their cut bottoms are indicated by no dotted lines 11 in Fig. 2. The rear ends oi the gage teeth have beveled portions 13 which underlap beveled front ends of The rear ends of the ranged a little below the level of the cut ing edges of the t h, prevent the g teeth from taking too great or rank a hold on the kerf in the saw out. front end portions of the gage teeth limit the depth of the out of the slicing. or cut- ,eeth 5.
By making the gage teeth I? with beveled ends and arranging theni as set forth, each gage toot-h forms an efficient and positive gage for two cutting teeth 5 and for the drag tooth 12 next following them.
The front end portions of the cutting teeth 5 have curved portions which rest upon the curved lower'portions and shanks of the drag or planer teeth 12, so that the drag teeth are reinforced and supported by the front end portions of both the gageteeth ower portions of The , -e drag teeth 12. teeth are oranism of the sawlng machine.- The various overlapping portions of the links and the and the cutting teeth. The curved portions 20 are preferably formed separate from the v curved portions 4, so that they intersect where they meet, in order that the cutting teeth and the gage teeth may be stronger and lighter and better proportioned, but the curves of these curved portions may be made continuous, as shown in Fig. 5, if desired. I
All the center links have downwardly projecting lugs 22, or other approved means, for engaging with the driving mechbending in one direction, when the. saw is straight; and permit it to bend, or turn on shanks of their teeth prevent the saw from its link pivots, in the opposite direction. They also stiffen the saw, and prevent it from vibrating, so that it can be used to out green wood or lumber to advantage.
In the vmodification shown in Fig. 5, the
general structure is the same as hereinbefore described, but instead of the single pairs of cutting teeth 5, the saw is provided with two pairs of cutting teeth 55 arranged ad-' jacent to each other and pivotally connected together. Instead of the gage teeth 17, similar gage teeth formed in two sections 27 and 37 are provided. These two sections are pi'votally'connected to ether, and these two sections are provided or the accomm0- dation of the,two pairs of cutting teeth 55. The curved front end portions 19 are formed on the front sections 27, and the beveled end portions 13 are formed on. the rear sections 37. 'In this form creased slicing action is provided in propor- .to the said links,
of saw, in-
tion to the planing action of the drag teeth,
but otherwise the action is the same as that of the saw shown in Figs. 1 to 4.
What I claim is:
1. In a chain saw, the combination, with side links provided with forwardly projecting cutting teeth, of center links pivoted to the side links and provided with forwardly projecting drag teeth having beveled cutting portions, and having also gage teeth each provided with an upwardly and rearwa rdly inclined top which extends from the lower parts of the cutting portions of two cutting teeth to'a point a little below and in front of the sharp cutting edge of the next following dragtooth, said gage teeth having beveled end portions which underlap the beveled cutting portions of the drag teeth.
2. In a chainsaw, the combination, with side links certain of which areprovidedwith cutting teeth, of center links pivoted certain ofthe center links being provided with drag teeth and other I center links being providedwith gage teeth each formed of two pivotally-connected secwardly and rearwardly inclined tops which extend rearwardly from between the cut.-
ting teeth to a point adjacent to the cutting HORACE EMMERSON MARTIN. Witnesses: v I
