BURIAL-GASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
Application filed October 13, 1914. Serial'No. 866,475.
T0 all ywhom it may concern Beit known that I, OSCAR G. GoMrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gibbons, in the county of Beaverhead and State of Montana, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Burial-Gaskets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to'caskets and cofns, and more particularly to linings therefor, and has for an object to provide a casket which can be hermetically sealed to be effectually water, air, odor and germ proof, and which furthermore, will be fireproof to the extent that the contents will be inclosed in metal, the body of the casket,
however, being preferably made of wood or some other fibrous substance.
' In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which: i
Figure 1 isa vertical t'ansverse sectional view taken through the casket; Fig. 2-is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the casket showing the manner of riveting certain parts together; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional view taken through the casket, with parts shown in perspective, the manner of bolting or sealing the casket being clearly set forth; and Fig. -L is a vertical longitud-inal sectional view taken on the line 1-l in Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the views I disclose a box or receptacle 10 which constitutes the body of the casket and which is preferably made of wood or some other fibrous substance, said box along its upper flat edge 11 being provided with a continuous strip 10 having a continuous upwardly projecting rib 12. Suitably secured to the strip 10 of the box by riveting or otherwise, is a continuous flange 13 of a lining 14in the nature of a supplementary receptacle or box and which is preferably made of metal. The flange 13 also has a continuous upwardly projecting rib 15 and the under side of the flange is provided with a groove 13l into which there is fitted the rib 12, Similarly, a gasket 17, preferably made of fiber or`some other suitable material, is arranged upon the flange 13 said gasket being provided with an upwardly projecting rib 18 and in its under side having a groove `19 with the upwardly projecting rib 15 arranged to extend into said groove. A top 20 preferably made of metal or the like, is provided adjacent its edge, with a continuous upwardly projecting rib 21 and its under side is provided with a continuous groove 22 through which extends the 4rib 18 ofthe fibrous or other similar gasket 17. Riveted or otherwise secured to the face of the top along its edge is a continuous strip 23 provided at its under side with a groove 24 into which is fitted the rib 21 of the top 20 and the lusual'lid 25 to the box 10 is then arranged to lie upon the flat upper edge of the strip23.
As mentioned heretofore, the strip 23 is preferably riveted, bolted, soldered or otherwise secured to the top 2O and the flange 13 of the lining 14 is similarly secured to the metal strip 10,the gasket 1T being interposed between the under side of the top 20 and the face of the flange 13 ofthe lining 1l. The strip 10 is provided with a threaded hole 1G in registration with an opening 13 in thel flange 13, said opening being in registration with an opening 1T in the gasket 17 with the last mentioned opening in registration with an opening 20 in the top 20, the latter mentioned opening in turn being in registrationvwith an opening 23 in the strip 23. The lid 25 has an opening 27 through which extends a sleeve Q8 having its upper end formed with an outturned flange Q9 adapted to repose upon the top of the, lid, with the lower end of the sleeve abutting against the face of the strip 23 whereby said sleeve will lie in registration with the various mentioned openings 13, 17, 20, and Q3 and the threaded hole 16 in the sidev of the strip 10. j
A threaded bolt 30 having a suitable head 31 is arranged to extend through the registering openings and through the sleeve, and has its threaded end adapted for threaded engagement with the strip 10 in the thraded opening 16 of said strip, the head 31 of the bolt bearing against the flange 29 of the sleeve QS. Now when the bolt isV inserted in the registering openings and screwed into the threaded opening in the strip 10, it will be 4seen that the various superposed parts will be drawn together, and the gasket 17` made of a fibrous material or the like will be suitably compressed so as to form a tight joint. Thus it will be apparent that the box or receptacle 10 top will be sealed not only by the lid but also by the top 20, and inasmuch as the box l0 and lid Z5 are preferably made of wood, it will be clearly apparent that should the casket be attacked by lire and the wood burned away, said casket would still be intact on account of the provision of the metal and the lining ll, and which two parts will be still firmlyheld together by the bolt on account of the fact that the bolt has threaded engagement with the metal parts only, the strip 10a being made of metal.
It will be clear that a casket of the character described will be hermetically sealed when the various parts are arranged and secured as mentioned, and it will also be clear that a casket of this character will be far lighter in weight than the usual metallic casket now generally used'. i
Having described the invent-ion I claim l. In combination with a box and a cover therefor, a lining for said box and projecting over the top edge thereof, agasket interposed between the projecting portion of the lining and said cover, a strip, a lid, with the strip interposed between the lid and the cover, and a bolt passing transversely through the lid, the cover, the lining and the interposed strip and gasket, for holding said last mentioned elements against relative movement.
2. In combination with a boX and a cover therefor, a lining for said box and projecting over the top edge thereof, a gasket interposed between the projecting portion of the lining and said cover, a strip, a lid, with the strip interposed between the lid and the cover, a bolt passing transversely through the lid, the cover, the lining and the interposed strip and gasket, for holding said last mentioned elements against relative movement, and a sleeve extending into the lid and having the bolt passing therethrough, with the head of the bolt bearing against the upper end of the sleeve, the lower end of said sleeve abutting against the interposed strip.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
