FOLDING BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
Application led October 5, 1914. SerialN'o. 865,602.
`in is a specification.
y invention relates to a receptacle of the folding type and designed primarily for conveniently folding and carrying articles of clothing, suits, hats, and the like, an object of this invention being to provide a blank which may be quickly formed into a box, which, when once folded, retains its folded form and on which is provided a convenient carrying grip for the hands.
These and other objects are accomplished by the blank described in the subjoined specification in connection with the accom- )anying drawing, and then more particulai-ly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank and Fig. 2 is a perspective, illustrating the blank in form of a folded The blank A comprises a bottom 1, having parallel score lines 2 and 3, and sides 4 and 5, foldable at the score lines 2 and 3 respectively at right angles to the bottom 1. On each end of the side 4 are end flaps 6, divided from and foldable at right angles to said side by score lines 7, said flaps 6 being held in such rectangular position at one end by tongues 8, which engage in incisions 9 on the bottom, and at the other end by tongues 10, arranged to engage incisions 11, on the top portion 1 2, and foldable at the score line 12 on said side 4. The side 4, with its complementary bottom l, end flaps 6 and top portion 12, forms a rectangular inclosure integrally connected with a telescoping inclosure of which the side 5 constitutes the main part. On each end of said side 5 is a flap 13, divided from and foldable at right angles to said side 5 by score lines 14, these flaps 13 being held in folded position by tongues 15 on said flaps, whiclr engage in incisions 16 in a cover 17, divided from said side by score line 18, and which cover is also held in position by said tongues 15.
Centrally of and integral with said cover 17 is a wing 19, formed with a cut-out portion 20, and providing a handle. A similar wing 21, and forming another handle, is cut out on three sides from said cover 17 the other side being connected with the side 5. Over the portion cut outlto form said handle or wing 21, may be glued, riveted or otherwise secured, a suitable reinforcing strip 22, which extends preferably'over the score line 18 and onto the other side 5..
The aforementioned top portion 12, is providednear the score line 12 with a slot 23 through which is arranged to extend the handle 19, when the blank is folded, as shown in Fig. 2, said handle serving also to hold the box folded. In folded form it will be seen that the cover 17 is immediately below the top portion 12, which latter also adds to the strength of the cover 17, and
insures the package against rupture at any point. It, will alsobe seen that where folded Y as shown, the handle 19 holds the inclosures, formed by the sides 4 and-5, and their complementary parts, in secure telescoped relation, and that, since the two inclosures have a common bottom, dissociation is impossible except at the top. The handles 19 and 21, may have suitable' interlocking members 24 for holding together the same, and may also be strengthened in any desired manner, by suitable reinforces.
What I claim is:
A box blank consisting vof a single strip of material having a bottom portion provided with incisions and two sides foldable at right angles to said bottom, one of said sides having end flaps, furnished with tongues for locking engagement with the incisions in said bottom, and a top portion provided with a slot; and said other side having a cover provided with incisions, and end Iiaps having tongues for engagement with the incisions in said cover said cover having cut therefrom a wing forming a handle and connected at one'point to said side, a reinforcement for said cover, and a wing forming a terminal extension of said cover and a handle, said handle bein arranged to extend through the slot in sai top portion of said first named side.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
