Be it known that I, ANDREW -LACKER MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Floor-Scraper, of which the following is a specification.
Theppresent invention a-,ppertai'ns to aA licor scraper, and aims to provide a novel and improved device for scraping floors and other surfaces.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a floor scraper including a stock, and having combined therewith in a unique manner, scraping bits or blades whereby the bits or blades may be adjusted as they become worn or to vary thedegree of scraping action, and whereby the scraper or implement may be conveniently and effectively employed for the intended purposes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention residesv in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
rlhe invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein l Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved scraper, a portion of the handle being broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the device, a portion of the handle being broken away. Fig. 3 is a front or outer end view of the device.
The stock of the present implement embodies a longitudinally curved shoe or bottom plate l, which is equipped at its rear or inner end portion with an upper longitudinal socket 2 for receiving the outer end ofa suitable handle 3. The stock is also provided along the side edges of the shoe with upturned flanges 4 which have their rear or inner ends converging and integral with the rear end or mouth portion of the socket 2.
The forward or outer end of the stock is provided with a bit or blade 5, which rests against the forward ends of the flanges 4, the said ends of the flanges projecting slightly beyond the outer end of the shoe Specification of Letters Patent.
y Patented Aug. 10, 1915. Serial No. 847,460.
or plate l to space thebit and shoe or plate apart and to provide anV opening or slot G between the blade 5 and the outer end of the shoe or plate l for the upward passage of the shavings or scrapings. The front ends of the flanges 4 are arranged approximately perpendicular to a plane tangential with the forward endy of the'plate, whereby the bit will be held perpendicular or at right angles relative to the said plane, for the most effective actionv of the bit upon the floor. he bit or blade is clamped in place by means of a clamp bar or cross piece 7 disposed transversely and resting` against the outer face of the bit 5 opposite the forward ends of the flanges, and screws or clamping elements are engaged through the ends of the bar 7 and through vertical slots 9 provided in the end portions of the bit 5 so that the screws may threadedly engage within the outer ends of the vflanges 4 for clamping the bit 5 between the flanges and the bar 7.
The shoe or plate l is provided intermediate its ends with a'transverse opening or slot 10 extending to the side flanges 4, and through which the lower end of a second b-lade or bit l1 extends. This bit 11 is held in place with j its lower, end depending through the opening or slot 10, by the means which will be presently described. vAn upright plate l2 is disposed infrontof the bit 11 in order that the bit may rest flatly thereagainst, and the lower end of the plate 12 is provided with an angular forwardly projecting flange or foot piece 13 which seats or'rests upon a pair of lugs or upstanding seats 14 provided upon the shoe or plate 1 directly in advance of the opening or slot l0 and adjacent the side flanges 4. The flange or foot piece 13 is provided adjacent its ends with slots 15 through which clamping screws 16 are passed into the lugs 14, for clamping the plate 12 at various longitudinally adjusted positions. The ends of the flange 13 and the side edges of the plate 12 are connected by webs 17 for bracing the plate 12.
The bit or blade 11 is clamped against the plate 12 by means of a clamping lever 18 which is in the form -of al plate and which has its lower end disposed snugly between the flanges 4 in rear of the bit 11, the side edges of the lever or plate 18 being provided with lugs 19 seating upon the upper edges of the flanges 4 for supporting the lever or plate 18 in position. The upper edges of the lianges 4L are provided with inwardly projecting lugs 20 in rear of the lever or plate 18 and against which the same rests, whereby the lugs 20 serve as fulcrums for the lever 18. A thumb screw 21 is threaded forwardly through the upper end portion or arm of the lever 18 to seat against the bit -11 for forcing the lower end of the lever 18 against the lower portion of the bit 11. A leaf spring 22 is preferably riveted or otherwise secured to the lever or plate 18 at its fulcrum point and projects upwardly so that its free portion lies between the thumb screw 21 and the bit 11.
rllhe bits or blades 5 and 11 may be adjusted in order that their lower ends will be properly positioned with respect to the lower surface of the shoe ora plate 1. Thus, when the clamping screws 8 are loosened, the forward bit 5 may be adjusted vertically to properly position the same, and may then be clamped in its adjusted position by tightening the screws 8. rIhe longitudinal position of the rear bit 11 may be regulated by adjusting the plate 12 longitudinally when the bit 11 is loosened, and which is permitted by loosening the screws 16. After the screws 16 have been tightened, and when the bit 11 is applied to the rear face of the plate 12 in front of the clamping lever 18, the thumb screw 21 being tightened, will cause the lever 18 to be so swung, that its lower end or arm will bind tightly against the lower portion of the bit 11, while the screw 21 will bind the upper portion of the bit against the upper portion of the plate 12, and consequently, the bit 11 will be properly held in its adjusted position. The spring 22 provides a comparatively large bearing surface for the end of the screw 21 and also prevents the screw from injuring Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the the bit 11. Furthermore, it is to be noted that the lever l18 may be readily removed from the stock by lifting the same out of place, so that when the bit 11 is first applied to the plate 12 while the lever 18 is removed,
the lower end of the lever 18 being inserted between the {ianges 4 in advance of the lugs 20, will cause the leaf spring 22 to bear against the bit 11, and as a result, the spring 22 will yieldingly press the lever 18 to clamping position for frictionally holding the bit in place until the clamping or jam screw 21 is tightened.
In use, the handle 3 is properly reciprocated and swung, to cause the shoe or plate 1 to ride properly upon the floor or other surface, to bring the bits or scraping blades 5' and 11 into play for scraping the floor.
Having thus described the invention` what is claimed as new is A scraper' comprising a stock including a curved bottom plate having upturned side flanges, certain ends of the iianges projecting slightly beyond one end of the plate and being arranged approximately perpendicular to a plane tangential with the said end of the plate, a bit resting against the said ends of the flanges and having vertical slots, a cross piece resting against the bit opposite the said flanges, and clamping elements engaging through the said cross piece and slots and engaged to the said ends of the flanges, the bit and said end of the plate being spaced apart to provide a slot therebetween.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW LACKERMANN.
