ZhaZ-l whom, it may concern Be it knownthat I, CHAUnonY B. HAY-l WARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West. Orange, in the county of Essex, inthe State of; Ne Jersey, have invented eertain new and. useful Improvements. in Clothes-Line Holders, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to clothesline holders tobe used in connection with endless or pulley clothes lines, for connecting the lower and upperbights. of the line to. prevent unduesagging' of the lower line to which the clothes, are attached, and which supports the weight of the wet clothes.
The upper and lower bights of a clothes line, ,when theclothes are in placeon the 6 lower bight and the "same is connected to the upper bight, in the regions where the two biightssare connected together, naturally fall into: reverse curves that is to: say the upper bight is drawn down at the polnt of attachment, and curves upwardlyiaway therefrom on either side, whereast he lower bight, be; ing supported atthefpointof connection,
falls away therefrom on either side, the amount 'ofsag the precise curves as sumed: by thetwobights of the line being de pendent upon the location inthe line of the connecting means, the amount of tension'to which the line i'sjsribjected, and'thetweight of the objects supported by the line.
A holder-constructed accordancefwith my invention" i'sfo-rmed with reference to these ondit ons, be ng made 19 9 a g prefierably integral'block of any desirable material, preferably glass or pereele-impr similar vitreous moldable mate-rial, and is catch and bind, as when theline gets into thespace between the pulley and its supsages formed therein are likewise of subprovided with passages therethrough, which passages are'curved in reverse direction so as to conform tothe natural curves of the two bights of the clothes line, thus permit ting the line to pass therethrough without the necessity ofv pulleys or other similar devices which are likely to tear; the clothes,
port,.and to get out of order in various ways. A holder according to my invention being made of substantial length, so that the passtantial length, will not catch or bind on the line in the manner familiar in the caseof fasteners for tent ropes and the like, which are formed with short passages and are held in place by being pulled to one side, creating ",epbrires-mm Hornet;

Ahclothe line holder coinstructedi in acreverse bends or a kink in the rope, which cordance with my invention is extremely my: invention'consists in the parts, improvements and comblnatlons herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and wherein the same reference numerals are used to designate the same parts throughout, Figure 1 is a view show inga holder accordance with my invention in place on acl'othes line, Fig. 2 is an end View of'the'holdenand Fig. 3 a side view thereof. v i
Reference numeralr 1 is used to indicate the holder generally and the reverse curved passagestherein which are preferably formed in the molding of theholder, are indicated the numeralsQ, 2. These passages are preferablycircular in cross section and of the foregoing and related objects in view, I
adiameter substantially twice the diameter of the clothes line with which the holder is to be used, or thereabouts, and the inner walls' ithereof'aremade as smooth as possible sothatthe line may pass through these passages without any considerable amount of friction er wear Block bemade thinner at the middleas shown Fig. 2 at 8*, 3 in order to make itlighter without unnecessary loss of strength, itsedges may be curved" inwardly asshown ate, 4, Fig.
3, in lines generally parallel tothe " curved passages 2, 2, thus improvlng, the appearance of the article and making it easier to,
hold with wet hands, an important consideration to the washerwoman hanging out the clothes whose hands are substantially always wet while this operation is'being performed. a i
Beads 5 are preferably formed at the junction of the inner wall of block 1 with the sides and edges thereof to prevent chipping, and to do away with objectionably sharp corners.
In order to make use of a holder 1n accordance with my invention, the lower and upper'bights of the clothes line are passed through the openings 2, 2 respectively, the holder being preferably arranged initially just behind the knot or other means where-. by the ends of the rope are secured together, such knot or other enlargement being formedin thelower bight of the line just ahead of the holder, so that as the line. is pulled out the knot or other fastening will travel away from the pulley or other support over which the rope is passed at the operators station. If the line is sufficiently [long to require a. number of holders, they r are initially strung along behind one another with the knot or other fastening ahead of the first one, as described above.
hen the upper support'of the rope is higher than that at the operators station, as is usually the case, the line passes easily through the openings 2 and will not move the holder, but it will remain under the influence of gravity in the neighborhood of the pulley or other support at the operators station. If the outer support is as low or lower than that at 'Whichthe operator is stationed, the holder can be kept back so not to interfere with the securing of the clothes tothe line by a mere push of the operators hand without the necessity ofany precautions being exercised to keep it straight, or
in any given relation to the line.
.Whena sufficient quantity of clothes have been hung on the line to require that the lower bight be supported from the upper bight, the holder is pushed out, and the the curved passage 2 within which the rope is received conforms substantially to the curvein the upper bight of the line, and
very little friction isset up between the line Copies of this patent may be obtained for and the remaining passage 2 conforming to the natural curve of the lower bight of the rope, no' twisting stresses are set up to interfere with the free passage of the upper bight of the rope through the upper passage 2. If after very long use there at any.
time should be too great wear on the. block within the upper passage where it moves on the upper bightof the line, as when a comparatively soft material is used for constructing the holder, the upper and lower halves being substantially identicah it will be readily possibleto reverse the'position of the holder, thus bringing a comparatively unworn surface to the region of greatest wear. 1 4
It is to be understood that changes may be made inthe construction shown within the scope of my claims without departing from my invention, or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having now described my. invention, I claim:- a
1. In aclothes line holder, a'blo ck of substantial length and made of one piece, the block having curved passages, the passages being curved in the same plane, said passages also having 5 their ends arranged so that they diverge where they. emerge from the block, substantially as set forth.
