My invention relates to hold fasts, and particularly to a hold fast for releasably tethering av rope, chain, cable or the like iiexible line, and an important object oi the invention is to provide a highly efficient device of this kind which can be cheaply manufactured and linstalled in a multiplicity oilocations, and with which the line may be quickly engaged or disengaged.
Other objects and advantages oi' my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description in connection with wherein iior purposes o illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention.

Referring in detail to the drawing, wherein like numerals reier tc like parts throughout the same, the numeral 5 generally designates a clothes line or the like which is secured at one end to a support 6 and engaged at its other end to the device of the invention generally designated l which is mounted upon a suitable post or other supporting medium 8.
The device of the invention comprises a generally circular body which has the appearance of Y a grooved pulley, and which may be constructed of wood, composition, metal or of any material round suitable for the purpose. Extending approximately one-half of the circumference of the circular body is a shallow rounded groove 9. At one end of the groove 9, the walls thereof are traversed by a pair of curved outwardly diverging grooves l0 and l1 which converge at the point 12 and merge into a relatively deep V-shaped groove 13 whose opposed surfaces are rounded and curved as shown particularly well in Figure 3. It will be observed that the walls converge to a rather narrow aperture 14 which is closed by a narrow curved wall l5 the intermediate point of which is located at a point approximately onethird of the distance from the adjacent edge oi the circular body. The V-shaped groove extends approximately one-half of the circumference oi the body and at its upper end merges into the transversely curved grooves l0, 1l and at the bottom with the groove 9. (Cl. 2li- 127) tically spaced openings 16 through which are to be passed securing means for securing the embodiment to a suitable support.
When it is desired to tether a portion of a line, such as a clothes line, cable, rope, or chain, the line is wound over the top of the body and down along and within the groove 9 then upwardly through the V-shaped groove 13 and to one side or the other through one of the transverse grooves li) and 11 from which position it is permitted to depend in the manner illustrated in Figure l. It is torbe observed that vthe end portion of the line may be disposed at either side of the body according to which side of the body is attached to the supporting medium. The line 'i disposed as described, will be securely held against pulling on, the stronger the pull exertedupon the main portion of the line the more secure the engagement of the end thereof in the wedging groove 13. The end oi the line may be quickly Y? and easily loosened from the embodiment simply by pulling lightly upon the loose end to withdraw it from the groove 13.
1t will be obvious that many uses oi the device of the invention may be made in various arts and sciences, and accordingly, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention to the embodiment shown herein, and any change or changes may be made in material and structure and arrangement of parts, within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claims,
What is claimed is:--
l. A hold fast comprising a generally circular body having in its periphery a shallow open groove, and communicated therewith a deep V- shaped clamping groove whose sides are substantially parallel at the deepest portion thereof, and means for mounting the body on a support against rotation.
2. A hold iast comprising a generally circular body having in its periphery a shallow open groove, and communicated therewith a deep V- shaped clamping groove whose sides are substantially parallel at the deepest portion thereof, and means for mounting the body on a support against rotation, the walls of the shallow groove being cut away to provide curved ltransverse channels for laterally extending portions of a rope engaged in the grooves.
A hold fast comprising a generally circular body having in its periphery a shallow open groove, and communicated therewith a deep V- shaped clamping groove whose sides are substantially parallel at the deepest portion thereof, and
means for mounting the body on a support against rotation, the walls of the shallow groove vbeing cut away to provide curved transverse channels for laterally extending portions of a rope engaged in the grooves, said channels being directed away from one end of the deep groove.
4. A hold fast comprising a generally circular body having in its periphery a shallow open groove, and communicated therewith a deep V-shaped clamping groove whose sides are substantially parallel at the deepest portion thereof, and means for mounting the body on a support against rotation, the walls of the grooves being cut away to provide laterally and oppositely eX- tending channels for receiving portions of a rope engaged in the grooves.
5. A hold fast comprising a generally circular body having in its periphery a shallow open groove, and communicating therewith a deep V-shaped clamping groove whose sides are substantially parallel at the deepest portion thereof, and means for mounting the body on a support against rotation, the walls of the grooves being provided adjacent the juncture of the deep and shallow grooves with traverse openings providing channels for receiving a portion of a rope engaged in the grooves and directing the same laterally outward of the grooves.
6. The combination with a support securing one end of a rope, and a second support distant therefrom, of a hold fast secured to the second support for quick detachably holding a free portion of the rope, said hold fast comprising a generally circular body fixed to the second support, a circumferential groove in the periphery of the body comprising a deep V-shaped semicircular groove portion facing the first support,
a shallow semi-circular groove portion on the opposite side of the body, said free portion of the rope being adapted to be brought over the top of the body and downwardly in the shallow groove portion and upwardly in the deep groove portion and forced thereinto so as to be held, said rope being quickly releasable by pulling the free portion out of the deep groove portion.
'7. The combination with a support securing one end of a rope, and a second support distant therefrom, of a hold fast secured to the second support for quick detachably holding a free portion of the rope, said hold fast comprising a generally circular body xed to the second support, a circumferential groove in the periphery of the body comprising a deep V-shaped semicircular groove portion facing the first support, a shallow semi-circular groove portion on the opposite side of the body, said free portion of the rope being adapted to be brought over the top of the body and downwardly in the shallow groove portion and upwardly in the deep groove portion and forced thereinto so as to be held, said rope being quickly releasable by pulling the free portion out of the deep groove portion, the side walls of the grooves having an opening therethrough for receiving the end of the rope portion in the deep groove portion and holding the same outwardly of the groove to enable easily reaching the same.
8. A hold fast comprising a circular body provided in its periphery with a deep V-shaped clamping groove whose sides are substantially parallel at the deepest portion thereof, and means for mounting the body on a support against rotation.
