POP-GUN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
Application filed March 4, 1915. Serial No. 12,015.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. SPENCER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pop-Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to pop guns, and has among the objects thereof to provide a pop gun which resembles a gun of the pump type. Further, to provide such a gun that in effect forms a pop gun which is repeating.
Other objects of the invention will more fully hereinafter appear.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line a2w of Fig. 2.
A designates the stock and B the barrel, which is rigidly attached to the stock.
C is a dummy trigger and D the trigger guard.
The barrel B is provided with a longitudinal central bore E and within this bore is arranged a reciprocatory plunger F having a head G snugly fitting the bore E. The head G is preferably formed of cork, but any suitable material may be employed. The rear of the plunger F is attached to a tongue H arranged for longitudinal sliding movement in a slot I in the bottom of the barrel, and this tongue carries a block or hand-grip J. In the structure shown, the block J is provided with segmental seats K for receiving the slides of the slotted portion of the barrel.
Connected to the plunger F by means of a cord N is a projectile 0, herein shown as a cork. The member 0 istapered and adapted to seat within the outer end of the barrel. Preferably the edge of the barrel around the bore E at the forward end of the latter is beveled, as indicated at P. As will be noted upon reference to Fig. 2, when the hand-grip J is in its rearmost position the projectile 0 will be drawn into the seat at the end of the barrel. When the hand-grip is moved forward the forwardly of the head G is compressed and the compression continues during the forward movement of the plunger until the projectile is forced from its seat.
By the arrangement described, the block J may be reciprocated forwardly and backwardly at a very fast rate, and effect automatically a loading and a firing of the gun, since each time the block J is moved rearwardly, the cord N will draw the plunger tightly into engagement with the seat in the end of the barrel.
The structure embodying the invention forms a very simple and eflicient pop gun, and provides a gun of the repeating type having the general appearance of the usual pump guns.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a pop gun the combination with the stock, of a barrel rigidly secured thereto, a plunger arranged within the barrel for longitudinal sliding movement, a piston head carried by the plunger, a projectile adapted to seat in the end of the barrel, a cord connecting the plunger with the projectile whereby the projectile is seated in the end of the barrel upon the retraction of the plunger, said barrel having a slot therein, and a hand-grip arranged eXteriorly of the barrel and connected to the plunger through said slot.
2. In a pop gun the combination with the stock, of abarrel rigidly secured thereto and provided with a longitudinally-extending slot upon its under side, the rear end of the slot terminating adjacent said stock, a plunger arranged within the barrel for longitudinally sliding movement, a piston head carried by the forward end of the plunger, a projectile adapted to seat in the end of the barrel, a cord connecting the plunger with the projectile whereby the projectile is seated in the end of the barrel air within the barrelupon the retraction of the plunger, and a hand-grip for actuating the plunger having a portion of reduced thickness passing through said slot and. rigidly attached to )the plunger adjacent the rear end thereof, said plunger having a portion adjacent its rear end fitting the barrel.
ROBERT B. SPENCER.
