lSuitable means are provided for regulating the drum 13 so as to control the unwinding of the flexible power transmitting device in such a manner as to keep the machine in proper position as the feeding mechanism feeds it forwardin cutting the material. As illustrated in detail in Fig. 3, the drum 13 is fastened to a sleeve 16 mounted on the shaft 17.. A bevel gear 18 is vconnected with the sleeve 16 .so as to rotate therewith. A second bevel gear19 is loosely mounted on the sleeve 16. A gear 20 -is mounted between gears 18 and 19, the gear 20 being provided .with openings for the bevel pinions 21 and 22, said pinions being held inkplace by the pins 23. The gear 20 engages a pinion 24 on the shaft 25. The pinion 211 is operatively connected to the Worm Wheel 26 by means of the clutch device 27 when said clutch device is in the position4 shown in dotted lines, and is disconnected therefrom When the clutch is inthe position shown in full lines (see Fig. Connected With 'the bevel gear 19 is a gear 28 which 'engages the p inion29 on the shaft 30, which lug is operatively connected With the motor. A Worm 31 engages the worm gear 26 and is provided with a shaft 32 which extends rearwardly and l which is mounted in the bearings 33 and 34. This shaft is controlled by the handle 35.
The use and operation of my machine are as follows: When the machine is in open ation the rear endof machine is fed foi Ward by means of the drum 7 and flexibley 'feeding device 6, and is held back from moving forward too rapidly by means of the drum 13 and flexible device 14, the motor 2 acting to rotate `both the drum 7y and the drum 13. It is `found in practice, however, that some suitable means is necessary to compensate foi' the different speeds'at which the iiexible power transmitting device is wound upon the drum 7 and unwound from the drum 13. This variation ifi-.speed may be due to various causes, such for example as the varying diameter of the drum`13 'as the flexible power transmitting device is un Y Wound. A single rotation of the drum for example when there are two or three layers of the flexible power transmitting device thereon pays out a greater length of the power transmitting device than when there is only one layer thereon, and hence if there is no compensating mechanism the proper forward feeding of the machine is prevented. If for example the flexible feeding device l-L is unwound too rapidly, the rear end of machine will be fed forward too rapidly and the machine will therefore be moved to zin-inclined position with the cutter arm lagging behind. If, on the other hand,` the flexible power transmitting device it is uiiwound too slowly, the cutter-arm will be fed forward too rapidly and themachine will take an inclined position with the cutter arm ahead. By means of the present construction. when either one of these conditions occur it is remedied by rotating the handle B5 and the shaft l2 so as to rotate worm 3l and worm gear 2t. lf' for example` the flexible power transmitting device l-i is being unwouiid too slowly so as to lioldfback the rear end of the machine, the operator grasps the handle lli and rotates the shaft 23'.) so as to rotate the worm 31 and worm gear 2U in a direction to cause the gear Q0 .to rotate ahead of the gear 2S, thus moving the drum 13 faster than it is moved by its connection with the motor, and this is done while the drum is still connected with the motor; for when the worm gear 2G is rotated the gear 20 will be rotated, `arrying with it the piiiioiis 21, said pinions moving with relation to the gear 2S b v means of the engagement of theirfteeth with-the .teeth on said gear 2S. If, on the other hand, the flexible power transmitting device 14 is unwound too rapidly so that the rear end of machine is moved forward too rapidly, the operator rotates the shaft 32, worm 3l and worm 'gear .27 in the opposite direction, thus i'etarding the 'rotation of the drum lll or even winding some of the flexible power transmitting device thereon if necessary until the proper posit-ion of the machine is secured. It will thus be seen that by means of this compensating device the rear end of machine may bc retarded or its movement speeded up bythe operator at will and that this result is secured without disconnecting 1.
