MINING-MACHINE.
Application filed July 1, 1911, Serial No. 636,383.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DAVIS, a citizen of the Jnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Tlli nois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mining-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mining'machines, and has for its object to provide new and improved machine of this description.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a plan View of a mining machine embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken on line of Fig. 2.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the mining machine is provided with a frame 1, carrying a motor 2. vl ounted upon this frame are the controlling and feeding mechanisms of the machine. A cutter arm 3 projects from the frame, and a cutter chain 4 moves about said arm and is provided with suitable cut ters 5. As the cutters cut away the face of the material acted upon, the machine is fed forward so as to make theproper cut. In the construction shown the feeding mechanism comprises a flexible power transmitting device 6, which is wound upon a drum 7, and which passes about a pulley 8, the outer end thereof being connected with a fixed device 9. The drum 7 is operatively connected with the motor 2 by means of the gear 10 on the shaf 11, the gear engaging teeth 12 on the interior of the drum. l hen the drum 7 is rotated by the motor, the flexible power transmitting device is gradually wound thereon and the machine moved laterally toward the fixed device 9, so that the cutters 5 will be kept in engagement with the face of the material to be cut. The engagement of these cutters provides a resistance to the forward feeding movement, so that the feeding mechanism tends to pull the rear end of the machine forward more rapidly than the cutter end. Some propermechanism must be provided for preventing this too rapid forward movement of the rear end of the machine, and to insure the proper forward feeding movement. cured by a suitable retarding device. This device comprises a drum 18 upon which is wound a flexible power transmitting device lt'connected with a fixed device 15 at a suitable distance .i'rom the machine. The drum 13 is connected with a gear 16 so to be controlled thereby. As herein shown the drum is keyed to the hub of said gear. A pinion 17 engages said gear. A worm wheel 18 connected with the pinion 17 by means of a clutch 19 having a connecting piece 20. 'ifhe worm wheel 18 is mounted upon the hub of the pinion 17. When the part 20 is in the position shown in dotted lines it enters a groove in the hub of the worm wheel 18 and connects the worm wheel 18 with the pinion 17. Then the worm wheel is disconnected from the pinion, the drum 13 may be rotated by means of the handle 26, so as to wind or unwind the flexible power transmitting device. When said connecting piece 20 is in the position shown in full lines, the worm wheel 18 and the pinion 17 are disconnected. A worm 21 engages the worm wheel 18 and is fastened to a shaft 22 mounted in bearings 23 and 2%. This shaft is provided with a controlling handle It will be noted that the drum 13 is entirely disconnected from the motor.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows:
When the machine is in use it is fed forward the drum 7 and the flexible feeding device T he resistance to the cutters tends to cause the rear end of the machine to be moved forward at too great a speed, so that the machine takes an inclined position with the cutters to the rear. This result is prevented by the retarding device which holds the rear end of the machine against forward movement, as the worm and worm wheel prevent the paying out of the flexible power transmitting de ice on the drum 13. Under these conditions, as the feeding mechanism acts the forward end of the machine is moved forward and the rear end held back. The operator who has charge of the macuine watches the feeding movement and turns the controlling handle 25 so as to rotate worm 21, worm gear 18, pinion 17 and gear 16, so as to rotate the drum 1 3 to properly pay out the flexible power transmit ing device. If this flexible power transmitting device is paid out too rapidly, the operator by turning the handle 25 in the other direc- G-OODMAN MANUFACTURING tion can wind the flexible power transmitting device on the drum so as to bring the rear end of the machine back to the proper position.
It will thus be seen that by means of this 7 device the operator can control the forward feed of the machine so as to secure the proper feed. The worm gear and worm wheel hold thedrum against rotation except when the handle 25 is turned.
I claim:
A mining machine comprising a frame, a cutting device projecting therefrom, a feeding mechanism for feeding the cutting device laterally toward the material to be-acted upon, a motor for actuating the feeding mechanism, a retarding device for retarding one end of said machine comprising a drum mounted on said frame and, disconnected from said motor, a flexible power transmitting device connected with said drum and with afixed part at a distance from the machine, a gear connected with said drum, a worm Wheel operatively connectedwith said gear, a'worm engaging said Worm wheel, and means for manually'rotating said worm so as to rotate said drum.
