Be it known that I, ALLEN E. OsIRANDER, residing at Ridgewood, Bergen county, New Jersey, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Underframes, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, such Yas will enable others 4skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the' invention, though itl is to be understood that the invention isnot limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof will occur to persons skilled in the art.

The form 'and location of the several parts entering into the car forming the subjectmatter of this application will be hereinafter more fully described.
The principal object of the invention is to produce an underframe to be used in box and other cars adapted for usev on railroads where it is finally erected, comprising principally commercially rolled members which areeasily obtained in the open market for use in the event of repairs, and with the parts enteringinto the structure so arranged and proportioned that the underfrarne may be temporarily assembled in the shops of the car builder for inspection, after which it maybe separated into a multitude of com'- posite units, which are so arranged that they may be packed for shipment in the holds of seagoing vessels for transportation to the country where the cars arev to be used, and for transportation, if necessary, in detached composite units for land shipment to the point of final erection and service.
It is well known that a la-rge number of rivets can be driven either by machine or otherwise in the shopof a manufacturer properly equipped for this service in a more economical manner than such rivets can be the shops of the car builder, where .only

hand-operated tools are available. In consequence' of this, it is one of the objects of the present invention to assemble the composite units in the shops and there drive as many rivets as possible consistent with the subsequent manipulation of the parts or fashioning of the car where it is to be used.

Referring particularlyto the underframe construction, it will be observed that the center sills l are formed of commercially rolled channels, which are spliced to, the draft sills 2, which they overlap, by rivets 3' projected through the Websfof the center sills and the ,draft sills. Over the floor above the bolsterthere is provided a topbolster cover plate 13, which unites the parts of .the-bolster projectinglaterally from the draft sills and" serves as a reinforce therefor. Between the end sections just described, the central-or intermediate portion of the underframe is formed with floor sheets- 15 and 16, v'which extend from thel sides of the cartoward. the lcenter line sufficiently far to overlapthe topl flanges of the center sills, with 'which said iioor plates are connected by'dircct rivet connection, which is ,supplemented by a longitudinally extending center sill cover-plate 17, which extends continuously from' the rear edge of one bolster cover plate 13 tothe corresponding edge'of the opposite bolster-cover plate 13 at the opposite end of the car, and it is to 'be noted that 'the -floor Aplat- esl 15,and 16 and thecenter sill cover plate 17 serve as an additional means for splicing or connecting the draft sills to the center sills before referred to, as said floor plates and sill cover plate cover the lapping portions of said center silll and draft sill meinbersland-Qi The floor plates at the ends of the middle portion of the underframe overlap the side angles 4 and 5, and serve as an additional reinforce at that connection, this connection or splice beingsupplemented by the angle plate 6,' before re-` plates' 12, said4 plates are connected to the next adjacent plates by means of commercially rolled angles 21. (See Fig. 3). The horizontal legs lof these angles are riveted to the'loor sheets 15,' 16 and 12, and are closely juxtaposed, and the vertical legs of said anunit-ing said .angles'and` through said angles uniting the floor sheets before referred to.-
Ait other points, if desired, the abutting edges of sheets 15, 15 and y16, 16 may-be connectedvby splice plates overlapping the meeting edges of such floor plates. For the purpose of reinforcing the underframe at the door opening, l have arranged the center fioor plates l5 and 16 somewhat wider than the plates l5 and 16, said plates l5u and 16u extending bevond the side sill angles 4 to form threshold plates','\vhich are stifened and reinforced within 4the zone of the door opening by relatively inverted U-shaped pressings i2, the vertical legs of which are connected by horizontal rivets with the vertical legs of the angles l, so as to provide proper support for said threshold plate portions of the plates l5a and 16, and the end-portions of the parts -l2 are connected by angle brackets -ll with side stakes 3l, which are commonly used in the body portion of a car.
As the depending vertical legs of the angles .l lap the angle 36, it is necessary to provide a filler-ll', which extends substantially the length of the underframe, except Within the door opening, thereby providing a reinforce for the side sill, Which side sill comprises the angles l and 36 and said filler plate li', except at the door opening, Where the inverted U-shaped plate #l2 takes the place of said iiller i?.
The angle 36 extends continuously, except as hereinafter noted, from end to end of the undert'rame and, considering the structure herein disclosed, said angle 36 is a necessary part of the underframe as an element of the side sill.

8. In combination, an underframe part adapted to be shipped asa unit comprising built up side sill parte, a built up end sill, a pair of spaced draft sills and a built "up bolster all united by a single door sheet and a bolster top cover plate riveted to said bolster through said floor sheet. o
9. A built up underframe comprising rolled flanged members held in position by floor sheets riveted thereto and comprising built up side sills, in combination With a side Wall terminating at its lower side in a rolled flanged lmember lapping and being connected to said side sill.
