To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CUNo JAooBs, a c1t1- zen of the United States, and resident of Chancellor, in the county of Turner and particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings andpointed out in the claims of this specification, its ob ect being to provide simple, economical, light and efiicient helmets for the protection of chauffeurs, aviators, sand-blast operators and others. Figure 1 of the drawings represents a sectional view of a helmet in accordance with my invention on the head of a wearer illustrated by dotted lines, the plane of the section'being indicated by dotted line 11 in the next described figure; Fig. v2, a front elevation of the helmet on the wearer, and Fig. 3, a plan view of the head-gripping frame of said helmet. Referring by numerals to the drawings, 4: indicates a bowed strip of spring-steel preferably tapered in opposite directions from approximately the middle thereof and secured to the broadest portion of the strip is an upwardly projecting member 5 of a snap-button. The bow 4 extends from front to rear over the head of the wearer of the helmet, and riveted or otherwise suitably fastened to the ends of said bow are bowed spring-steel head-clamp strips 6 and 7. The clamp 6 is designed to fit the forehead, and the clamp 7 is designed to fit the occiput of the wearer of the helmet. in practice the inner faces of said clamps may be faced with cloth or rubber material if found necessary or desirable for comfort. The assembled members aforesaid constitute a head-gripping frame.

Riveted or otherwise fastened to the front of the bow 4 is an inclined stiff steel strip 8 and hinged to the forward lower end of the same is an elliptical band 9, this band being preferably of aluminum for lightness. The band is provided with an inturned outer flange 10, and an out-turned inner flange 11. 'Set in the band against its flange 10 is a pane 12 of transparent material,

preferably celluloid. and opposing the pane is a flanged spacing ellipse 18, against which another pane l l, of material similar to the one aforesaid, is set. Opposing the pane 14 is a stay ellipse 15 held in place by clips 16 swaged out of the flange 11 of the band 9. The spacing and stay ellipses are preferably aluminum, and the setting of the panes in the band 9 is such that a dead-air space is formed between said panes to prevent frosting of the same when the helmet is in use. Attached to the flange 11 of the band 9 are stay-strips 17, and each stay-strip is detachably engageable with a socket 18 with which the clamp 7 is provided.

Covering the head-gripping frame above specified is a hood 19 of any suitable pliable material, and a snap-button section 20 with the crown of the hood engages the snapbutton section 5 with the crown-strip 4 of said frame. An elliptical opening in the front of the hood registers with the glazed band 9 aforesaid, and below said opening said hood is slitted and fashioned to have a flap 21 that buttons over the remainder thereof, to close the slit, snap-buttons being preferably employed.

Employed in connection with the front of the hood, approximately parallel to the closed slit of the same, are stiffening strips 22. Attached to the back of the hood are preferably elastic bands 23 designed to extend under the armpits of the wearer of the helmet and button to the front of the said hood, snap-buttons being preferably employed.

Ventilators are set in the sides of the hood, and a stem '24 of a rotary adjustable member 25 of each ventilator is accessible outside of said hood. By manipulating the rotary member of a ventilator the area of opening in the stationary member of said ventilator is regulated.

The organization of the helmet is such as to provide for ready separation of parts of the same to facilitate repair.

In matters of minor importance the details of the helmet may be varied from what is herein shown and described without departure from the scope of my invention as claimed.

I claim:

1. A helmet comprising a head-gripping frame, a glazed member hinged to and suspended in connection with the frame at the front thereof, a frame-supported hood pro vided with an opening in register with the glazed member, and hold-down straps with said hood to extend under the armpits of I the wearer of the helmet.

4. A helmet comprising a head frame consisting of a crown-bow, front and rear headclamps in connection with ends of the bow, asupport extending from the crown-bow at he front thereof, a glazed member hinged to and suspended from the support, side stays attached to the glazed member and engageable with sockets with which the rear clamp is provided, and a frame-supported hood provided with an opening in register with the glazed member.

5. A helmet comprising a head frame consisting of a crown-bow, front and rear head-clamps in connection with ends of the bow, a support extending from the crownbow at the front thereof, a glazed member suspended from and hinged to the support,

and a hood having snap-button connection o.

with said bow, the hood being provided with an opening that registers with said glazed member.

6. A helmet having a member thereof in the form of an elliptical band provided with an inturned outer flange and an out-turned inner flange, a'pane of transparent material opposing said ,outer flange, an elliptical spacer in the hand against said pane, another pane of, transparent material set against the spacer, and a stay ellipse fastened against the innermost pane.

7 A helmet comprising a bowed resilient head engaging strip, a bowed forehead engagingresilient strip, at the front end of the head strip, a bowed resilient strip for engaging the rear of the head attached to the rear end of the head strip, a supporting strip extending outwardly from the front portion of the head strip, a glazed member hinged to the outer end of the supporting strip, a hood inclosing the strips and glazed member, and having a detachable engagement with the upper portion of the headstrip, the hood being provided with a side opening that registers withthe glazed member, and body engagingmeans carried by the hood. 7
