GAMBBEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1915.
Application filed. February 4, 1915. Serial No. 6,054. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES HOOGEWON- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of VVapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gambrels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its primary aim to provide -a novel device of the above character wherein is embodied a practical and durable construction of simple management.
A further object resides in the improved means for securing the animal to the gambrel.
It is the custom in packing plants to cut the cords in the hind legs of hogs to pro vide holes into which a stick or gambrel may enter. This operation spoils the hind legs for many uses, such as pickling.
Another object of my invention, therefore, is to provide a gambrel for supporting the animals without necessitating the mutilation of the bodies.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following specification and accompanying drawings, while those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts on which I desire protection will be succinctly defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a gambrel embodying the preferred construction of my invention; Fig. 2 is a frag mentary longitudinal section thereof; and Fig. 3 shows one end portion of the gambrel in perspective.
Employing like characters of reference for corresponding parts throughout, my gambrel comprises a body 1 formed of any suitable material and having its enlarged end portions 2 each terminating in a hook 8 which is bent backwardly toward the body but spaced therefrom to receive easily the leg of the supported animal. The inner or active face of each hook is provided with serrations or corrugations 4 to grip effectively the object. Each end portion 2 is furcated, as at 5, one furcation of which is extended to form the hook 3 which latter is disposed in opposing relation to the furcated portion.
Between the furcations 5 is pivotally mounted on pin 6 a gravity-operated, clamping member 7, the serrated active face 8 of which is curved longitudinally and eccentrically arranged with the pivot 6 whereby on swinging the clamping member to its operative position the active face will advance toward the active face of the respective hook 8 which it opposes. In this connection, it will be noted that each hook member forms with its clamping member an efficient and quickly operable securing means, one element of which is movable relative to the companion element and so mounted as to tend to grip the object tighter under the weight of the latter. concaved transversely to afford greater surface and the serrations thereof are arranged substantially horizontal as are the serrations 4.
An upwardly extending handle 9 is provided on clamping member 7 to facilitate the operation of the latter.
In practice, the gambrel, subsequently to supporting the animal thereon, is mounted on a suspending element of an overhead carri age such as is used in packing houses. To keep the suspending element central relative to the gambrel, I provide on the latter a pair of spaced stops 10 between which the suspending element engages.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding and no undue limitation is to be understood therefrom, but the annexed claim is to be construed as broadly as is permissible in view of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is:
A gambrel comprising a body having enlarged ends furcated, each end having one of its furcations extended and bent backwardly in the form of a hook toward the companion furcation but terminating in spaced relation thereto to provide an entrance opening, the entrance opening of each end being provided on the same side of the body, and a clamping member eccentrically pivoted between the furcations of each end and having the pivot arranged adjacent the lower part of the clamping member where- The active face 8 is by the upper part of the latter is adapted In testimony whereof I aflix my signature for swinging across the entrance opening to in presence of two Witnesses.
close the same and into the hook portion of CHARLES HOOGEWONING. the extended terminal, the upper part of Witnesses:
the clamping member being provided with ENos EATON,
an angularly disposed handle. ROLLA W. CORNELL.
