To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES F. MENZEL and GUY C. CARPENTER, citizens of the United States, residing at Roxbury, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the fol.- lowing is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pliers, .and has for its principal object to provide a pair of pliers which are particularly adapted for use in making chains of wire or similar material.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pair of pliers which will effectively spread the links of the chain in order that additional links may be added if so desired.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of pliers in which the links may again be compressed to their normal condition and any danger of accidental displacement thereof is eliminated.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of a pair of pliers constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numerals 1 and 2 des ignate as entireties the two cooperating members forming the pliers. The element 1 is provided at one end with the enlargement 3 which is cut away as at 4:. This cutaway portion extends angularly as at 5 and terminates in the enlargement 6 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. A suitable angular extension 7 is formed at the free terminal of the enlargement and terminates at its free end in the upstanding tooth 8, which is provided with the inwardly extending angular face 9, the use of which will appear as the description proceeds.

A plurality of transverse ribs are formed on the inner faces of the enlargement 6 and thus forms the jaw member, which is arranged to cooperate with the jaw member which will be more fully hereinafter de scribed.

The member 2, hereinbefore referred to, is provided with the enlargement 11 which is cut away in a manner similar to'the cutaway portion 4, and is arranged to fit the cut-away portion to permit the members 1 and 2 to be pivotally secured as at 12. A suitable angular extension 13 is formed on the enlarged portion 11 at its free terminal and said angular extension is provided with a plurality of ribs 14 at its inner face which are arranged to cooperate with the ribs 10, hereinbefore mentioned. A suitable angular extension 15 is formed at the free terminal of the portion 13 and terminates at its upper end in the extension 16, which is provided with the recess 17 in which the link of the chain which is being opened, is adapted to rest.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the link of the chain which is to be opened is placed so that one end rests in the recess 17 hereinbefore mentioned, and the free edge of the tooth S of the pliers, is inserted between the body portion of the link and the rearwardly turned end. Upon opening the pliers, it will be apparent that the link will be forced open, and thus a new link may be substituted. After the desired number of links have been placed in position, the link which has been opened is then placed between the jaws of the pliers so that they will rest in the spaces between the ribs 10 and 14:, whereupon pressure is applied to the handles of the pliers and it will become evident that the link will be closed and any accidental displacement of the remaining portions of the chain will be eliminated.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described our invention, we claim:

A pair of pliers comprising handle portions, enlargements formed on the handle portions, said enlargements being offset with relation to the handle portions and being hinged together near the point where they join the handle portions, jaws formed by the enlargements, a longitudinal extension at the free end of one of the jaws, said extension being of less width than the jaw and being provided with a notch in its outer face, the inner face of the jaw being conerating. jaw and an inclined outer face formed on the extension, said inclined outer face forming an edge at the terminal of the extension which is arranged to engage between the bent over portions of the links of a Wire chain to force the same outwardly 10 and thereby open the link.
