To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELKAN GosLINER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sound-Producing Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an improved sound producing amusement device, so constructed as to permit of a cane or similararticle, preferably, such as have a crook handle, to be utilized as the supporting member for theattachment thereto of castanets or other form of clapper devices for the production of sound on a rapid to and fro movement or waving of the cane or holder to which it is applied.

The invention resides more particularly in thecoupling means by which the castanets or sound producing instrumentality, is frictionally held to the cane, stick or similar article to which it is to be applied, the construction of the coupling means being such as to enable the sound producing ele ment to be readily applied to or detached from the stick, cane or other supporting article.

The object of'the invention is to enable castanets or other clapper sound producing instrumentality to be so utilized in connection with assemblies, parades, conventions and festive affairs generally, and places of amusement that the owner thereof may readily give audible expressions to his feelings, instead of producing the appreciative applause or sound by hand clapping, and to permit of the utilization of the pennant sticks, which are ordinarily employed for display approval, to be utilized as the holding member for actuating the sound producing instrumentality.

To comprehend the invention-reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation, illustrating the castanets as frictionally coupled to a pennant stick or cane. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1 with the pennant stick or cane removed. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, disclosing ribbon ornamentation as applied to the clapper board for the castanets.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to indicate any suitable form of a pennant stick or cane, which is provided in the present case with the usual crook handle 2,

and to which the castanets are united and frictionally held by means of the coupling member 3. In the present case, the castanets 4 are illustrated as flexibly connected for vibratory movement by the flexible connection 5 to a clapper board 6, which clapper board is interposed between the inner faces of the castanets, but it will be readily understood that any form of castanets or other vibratory instrumentalities may be employed as the sound producing device.

The coupling member 3 is provided with a stud 7, which said stud is rigidly secured in any suitable manner within a bore 8 formed in the present case in the inner edge portion of the clapper board 6, to which the castanets are movably secured.

In the body portion of the coupling member 3 is provided a vertical bore 9 which is intersected by a longitudinal bore 10, so as to produce an arc-angular passageway for the insertion of the pennant stick or cane 1, and the disposition of the bores 9 and 10 relative to each other is such that when the coupling is slipped over the crook portion 2 of the pennant stick or cane 1, to a point beyond the bight 11 thereof, the said coupling member will frictionally bind there- 'on and be firmly held to the said pennant stick or cane 1, and thus securely attach the castanets or vibratory sound producing element to the said pennant stick or cane. When thus applied, it is apparent that by shaking or violently waving the pennant stick or cane 1, the castanets or vibratory sound producing element or elements will co-act with the clapper board 6 for the producing of a noise to give expression to the feelings of the operator of the said device.

For the purpose of ornamentation or adding to the general appearance of the sound producing amusement device, the clapper board 6 is provided with a series of apertures or openings 12, adjacent the outer edge portion thereof, and in such openings or apertures are secured the ribbon streamers 13, the colors of which, for use of the device in connection with football and baseball games, will be such as to indicate the side for which the owner thereof appears, and if so desired, the colored pennant usually employed in connection with the pennant stick or cane, may be attached thereto in the ordinary manner.

Usually, in connection with football, baseball and inter-collegiate sports, the assemblage is dependent on pennant sticks with the appropriate colored pennant or streamers thereon to givevent to their feelings by violently waving of the pennant stick, but by the present invention the adherents of either side are permitted to give expression to their feelings in an audible manner.

The construction and arrangement of the coupling member for uniting the sound producing amusement device to the pennant stick or cane is such that the same may be readily removed therefrom, so as to permit of said device being carried in the pocket and quickly applied to the pennant stick or cane when it is desired to utilize the sound producing amusement device.

The present invention may be utilized in connection with street parades of all characters, and for use in convention halls generally, or, in fact, used wherever it is desired in an assemblage to give audible ex pression of approval to whatever takes place, and for which it is desired to express approval, and it is equally as well adapted for use on gala days generally, and for all forms of holiday affairs, such as New Years Eve, and the device Will appeal more particularly to women, as it enables them to give audible expression to their feelings without resorting to the usual hand applause, and in this manner avoids the necessity for the removal of gloves for the purpose of applause.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a pennant cane or similar holder, of a vibratory sound producing device, and a coupling member for frictionally uniting the sound producing device to the said pennant cane or holder.

2. The combination with a pennant cane uniting a sound producing device to a supporting member, the same comprising a body portion provided with an angular disposed passage-way for the insertion of a supporting member therethrough, and a stud or ex tension projected from the said body portion for engagement with the sound producing device.

5. The combination with a sound producing device, composed of vibratory members and a clapper member interposed therebetween, of colored streamers attached thereto, and a coupling member united to the sound producing device and provided with an angular passage-way in the body portion thereof for the reception of a supporting member for the sound producing device.

6. The combination with a vibratory sound producing device, of a coupling member extended therefrom for detachably connecting the same to a supporting member.
