To (ZZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, -WILLIAM FULLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, and HUGH T. QUIGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haddonlield, county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Platen Printing Press or Machine, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a new and useful attachment for a platen printing press or machine, and consists of a connection between the bed and the platen, whereby through movement of the bed, the platen 1s suitably and properly actuated.
It further consists of other novel features, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating our lnvention, we have shown in the accompanying drawing, one form thereof which is at present preferred by us, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which our invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that our invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure l is a side elevation of a platen printing machine embodying our invention, with certain of the parts omitted. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing certain of'the parts of Fig. 1 in different position thereto. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on l1ne m-w of Fig. 2, with parts broken away.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :--1 designates the frame or support of the machine, upon which, it will be understood, all of the necessary parts of a platen printmg press are supported and arranged in suitable relation, in order that the operations of the parts are properly timed with respect to each other, it being further understood that certain parts of the machine are omitted from the drawing for the sake of clearness.
2 designates the bed of the machine, which is pivotally mounted at 3 upon the frame 1 for rocking movement, and to which one end of a connecting rod 4 is suitably connected, the opposite end of the rod being suitably connected with a wrist pin 5 carried by a gear or disk 6, to which motion is imparted in any suitable or desired manner.
It will thus be seen that by the rotation of the gear or disk 6, that a suitable rocking movement will be imparted to the bed 2.
7 designates the platen of the machine, which is mounted in a desired manner upon a suitable support, such as a shaft 8. Connected with said shaftS is an arm 9 to the free end of. which is pivotally connected a link 10, which is also connected with one arm 11 of an elbow lever, which is pivotally mounted at 12 upon the frame 1 of the machine, and the other arm 13 of which is provided, with a suitable slot 14 forming a cam member. Carried by the bed 2 is means for coacting with the cam member, here shown as a stud or roller 15, which is movable in the slot 14.
The operation of the parts will be apparent. Motion being imparted to the gear or disk 6, the bed 2 is reciprocated by move ment of the connecting rod 4. As the bed 2 is moved, the elbow lever will be suitably rocked on its pivotal point 12 by reason of the engagement of the stud 15 with the wall of the slot 14, and it will impart a rocking movement to the arm 9 and thus to the shaft 8, upon which the platen 7 is mounted, in order that the said platen 7 will be suitably actuated and will be located in a proper position with respect to the face of the bed 2, and timed in its movement with respect thereto, in order to accomplish the desired purpose.
We are aware that it is old to impart a rocking movement to a platen by means of a connection with a cam groove carried by the gear 6, but we have found in actual practice that such driving means causes irregular movement to the platen by reason of the wear of the parts due to the strain upon the cam face and coacting pin.
By our construction, we have found from actual practice that the actuating means for the platen is positive in its nature and imparts a proper and easy movement to the platen at all times.
Having thus described our invention,
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. Ina platen printing machine, a bed movably supported, means directly connected with the bed for rocking the same, a mov- 1 ably mounted platen, and a pivotally mounted elbow lever independent of the rocking means, having an arm thereof in suitable connection with the platen and the other arm in suitable connection with the bed,
vwhereby the movement of the bed imparts movement to the platen.
2'. In a platen printing machine, a bed movably mounted, means for rocking said bed, a movably mounted platen, a pivotally mounted elbow leverhaving. one arm slotted, a connection between said platen and one arm of said elbow lever, and a stud carried by said bed and movable in the slot of said elbow lever to impart movement thereto and to the platen, when the bed is moved.
3. In a platen printing machine, a bed movably mounted, means for rocking said bed, a movably mounted platen, a pivotally mounted elbow lever having one arm provided with a cam member, a connection between said platen and one arm of said elbow lever, and means carried by the bed and coacting with the cam member of the elbow lever to impart movement thereto and to the platen when the bed is moved.
4:. In a platen printing machine, a. bed
movably mounted and constituting a movable element, means for rocking said bed, 1
able elements, and a cam member and coacting means therefor common to the said elbow lever and the other of said movable elements, to impart movement to the platen when the bed is moved.
5. In a platen printing machine, a bed movably mounted, means for rocking said bed, a rocker shaft suitably supported, a platen suitably connected therewith, an arm connected with the shaft, a pivotally mounted elbow lever having one member provided with a cam and the other member movably connected with the arm, and means carried by the bed and coacting with the cam of the elbow lever to impart movement thereto and to the platen when the bed is moved.
