Letters Patent No. 114,818, dated May 16, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN BABVS TRAVELING AND TOILET-CHAIRS.
The Schedule reflex-red to in theseLetters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mrs. ESTHER HOARE, of Dedhain, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Babys Traveling and Toilet-Chair; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this'specificatiou.
Figure 1 is aside view of my improved chair, partly in section, to show the construction.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same detached from the bag and opened up for use.
Figure 3 is a detail view of. the detachable cover of the chair.
Figure 4 is an under-side view of the cover of the bucket,
' Figure 5 is a top view of the bucket. My-invcntion has for its object to furnish a simple and'convenient device for childrens use at home or when traveling-and which shall be so constructed that it maybe attached to the bottom of a carpet or travcling-bag; and.
f It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the device as hereinafter more fully described.
and is hinged at its lower edge to the end of the bottom of said box A, as shown in figs. 1 and 2, so that it may be-turned down, as shown in fig. 2.
The box A is dividedinto-two unequal compart-.
ments by the partition a.
In'the smaller compartment of the box A, at a suitable distance above the bottom of the box, is formeda seat, B, in the hole of which is fitted a bucket, G.
The top of the bucket G is formed with a flange to rest upon the seat B, which is recessed to receive it, and with lugs at a little distance below said lip or flange, which lugs pass through notches in the seat B, and, when-the said bucket is turned partly around, rest against the under side of the seat B and prevent the bucket from getting out of place.
D is the coverfor the bucket O, and tits closely upon the mouth of thebucket O, to which it is securely fastened by catches, d, which enter slots in the flange or rim of the bucket C. One end of the said slots is made larger than the other end so that, when the coverD is placed upon the bucket G andpartially turned around, the catches d will pass into the narrow parts of the said slots and securely fasten the cover.
To the, upper edge of the partition a is hinged the lower edge of the board E, which forms the back of. the chair, and which, when notin use, may be turned down above the seat B.
To the sides of the box A, a little below'its upper edge, are hinged the'lower edges of the boards E, which form the sides or arms of the chair, and which are provided with stops which receive and support the back E, as shown in fig. 2. When not in use'the sides F may be turned down upon the top of the turned-down back. E, as shown in fig. 1.
G is a table, the ends of which enter grooves in the sides or arms F, and which serves the double purpose of a guard to keep the child in the seat and of a table to receive his laythings. When not in use the table G may be placed beneath the forward part of the seat B, as shown in fig. 1. f
The larger compartment of the box A serves as a receptacle for the babys clothes or other things, and
a is covered with a top, H, one end of which is hinged to the upper edge of the partition a.
The upper edges of the box A project a little so as i to receivethe bottom of a carpet or traveling-bag, I, v to which they are secured by pins which pass through the projecting edges and enter holes in the edges of the said bottom.
When used athome the bag I may be detached and a cover, J, placed npon'the top of the box A. The cover J may be upholstered in any desired manner.
The seat B may also be provided with a detachable seat, K, made without a hole, to adapt the device to A is a box or case, one end,o,ofi'which is loose,
be used as an ordinary chair.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The bucket O and cover D, constructed and secured to each other and to the seat B, substantially as .herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2.- The hinged back and sides F and detachable table G, in combination. with the box A, seat B, bucket O, and cover D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination. of the box A, provided with a hinged end, a', and partition a seat B, bucket O, cover D, hinged back and sides or arms'E F, detachable table G, and hinged cover H with each other,
whether the bag I be used or not, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the box A, provided with a hinged end, a, and partition a, seat B, bucket 0, cover D, hinged back and sides E F, detachable table G, and hinged cover H with a carpet or travelinghag I, substantially as herein shown and described, and'i'or the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 28th day of February. 1871. i Witnesses: ESTHER HOARE.
