Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. Porn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weldon, in the county of Halifax, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Logging-Car Stakes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to logging car stakes of the type which. are releasable for unloading logs at the side of the car, and it has for its object to provide a pivoted stake which may be folded inward substantially plane of the bolster and which may also be folded outward, when released, for discharging the load directly upon a slide or elsewhere.
Another object is to provide improved and simplified means for releasably holding the stake in an erect position when the car is loaded, said holding means being actuated by gravity when released, for removing the obstruction from the path of rotation of the stake so that the latter will be free to swing outwardly under the pressure of the load.
A further object is to construct the stake and its bearing plates in such a way that they may be applied or attached to either metal or Wooden bolsters. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute a part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side view of a metal bolster having stakes constructed substantially in accordance with my invention attached to its ends. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, showing the stakes folded inwardly. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the device as shown in Fig. 2, just in front of the stakes. Fig. 4: is a detail side view of one end of the bolster, showing the stake folded outwardly and resting upon a slide or chute, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the bolster, showing the stake in upright position.
The bolster 1 may be made of two angle bars 2 having horizontal flanges 3 and 4 at their upper and lower edges extending in opposite directions, and their vertical portions or webs 5 presented to each other but spaced apart, as illustrated best in Fig. 2. To the inner faces of the webs 5 there are socured bearing plates 6 and 7 at either end of the bolster, and between the pair of plates at each end a stake 8 is pivoted, as at 9, the lower end portion 10 of the stake projecting well below the pivot. The angle bars 2 are secured together by bolts or rivets 11 passed through the intermediate portions of their webs, as well as by the pivot pins 9 for the stakes.
. The bolts or rivets 11 hold a filling block- 12 in position between the angle bars. This filling block may be of wood or other suitable material and has the upper faces of its end portions inclined, as at 13, to receive the stakes when folded inwardly, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, so that said stakes may be folded substantially into the plane of the bolster and yet leave a sufiicient portion projecting above the bolster to be gripped for raising the stakes to upright position. When folded inwardly, as shown and described, the stakes will not interfere with the car passing under the loading machine.
The plates 6 and 7 have depending portions projecting below the bolster and di vided into two parts 13 and 14: bytransverse vertical slots 15 entering from the bottom and extending upwardly to the lower edge of the bolster.
The portions 13 and 14: of one plate carry angular brackets 16 between which a latch 17 is pivoted. This latch may be swung up into horizontal position so as to extend through the slots 15 of both plates of the pair and across the space between said plates. The depending portions 13 and 1 1 opposite those carrying the brackets 16, have secured to their outer faces angular brackets 18 and 19. The bracket 18, which is arranged on the inner side of the slot 15, is perforated to receive the eye 20 of a looking pin 21. The bracket 19 is provided with a hook 22 having a downwardly and inwardly inclined entrance passage 23, see Fig. 5, whereby the free end portion of the locking pin may be retained in the hook under the weight of the latch 17 without danger of being jarred out or otherwise inadvertently released, it being understood that when said locking pin is arranged in the hook 22, it will support the latch in a horizontal position so that the latter will form an abutment for the lower projecting end portion 10 of the stake and prevent said stake from being swung outwardly. When it is desired to release the stake so as to permit it to swing outwardly, this can readily be done by simply detaching the free end portion of the locking pin from the hook 22, whereupon the latch 17 will swing downwardly by gravity to the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 4; and in dotted lines in Fig. 5, leaving the stake free to swing outwardly under the weight of the load.
As shown in Fig. 4, the stake, when swung outwardly, may rest directly upon a slide or chute 2st. It will also be noted that the pivots 9 of the stakes are arranged well above the bottom edge of the bolster and top edge of the latch when the latter is in its horizontal position, so that the latch offers no obstruction to the stake folding inwardly and simply comes into play to prevent the stake from moving outwardly beyond its erect position. The bearing plates 6 and 7 and the brackets 16, 18 and 19 are preferably made of malleable iron and are adapted to be secured to bolsters made entirely of wood, as well as those constructed of angle bars as herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination with a logging car and a pivoted stake having its lower end portion projecting beyond the pivot, of a latch to engage the lower end portion of the stake for retaining said stake against swinging outward to unloading position, the latch being releasable for permitting the stake to swing outward to unloading position, and the stake being foldable inwardly across the latch substantially into the plane of the top of the car when said latch is in position to engage the lower end portion of said stake as specified.
2. The combination with a pivoted stake,
of a latch for retaining the stake against swinging outward to unloading position, said latch being adapted to move by gravity to a position for releasing the stake when said latch is itself released, a locking pin pivoted at one side of the latch, and a hook at the other side of the latch to support the free end portion of the locking pin so that said pin will normally extend below and support the latch in looking position.
3. The combination with a pivoted stake, of a latch for retaining the stake against swinging outward to unloading position, said latch being adapted to move by gravity to a position for releasing the stake when said latch is itself released, a locking pin pivoted at one side of the latch, and a hook at the other side of the latch to support the free end portion of the locking pin so that said pin will normally extend below and support said latch in looking position, the entrance slot or the hook being inclined inwardly and downwardly to prevent accidental release of the locking pin.
4:. The combination with a pair of bearing plates having depending portions separated by a vertical slot in each plate, of a stake pivoted between said plates well above the upper end of said slots and having its lower end portion projecting well below the upper ends of said slots, a pivoted latch adapted to swing through the slots and across the space between the plates, and means for supporting the free end of the latch to retain it in position to abut against the lower end portion of the stake for retaining the latter from swinging outwardly to unloading. position.
