The object of this invention is to provide a simple, positive and easily manipulated device for tightening the fastening cords, such as are used in connection with improved bag seals of the type set forth in my Patent #1,126,37 6, by drawing them through the seal and holding them at thedesired tension until the seal is pressed and the cords locked. V

The invention consists in an improved attachment for seal presses of a type set forth in Patent #1,071,139 to E. J. Brooks but is not necessarily restricted thereto, but may be used with any seal press adapted to compressing locking seals over cordage where it is desired that the cords be drawn tightly through the seal preliminary to scaling.

One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters refer to" like parts throughout.

Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a seal press with cord-tightener attachment, seal in place and the cords adjusted through the drum slot preliminary to scaling; Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are top, front and side views respectively of the seal press head with the cord-tightener attachment; Fig. 5 is a sec tional view of the drum and guide of the cord-tightener attachment on the line 55 of Fig. 4:.

drum, adapted to guide the sealing cords upon said drum as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In operation the fastening cords are wrapped as usual about the neck of the bag and drawn snug through the seal by hand. The seal is then placed between the dies of the press where it is firmly held by any suitable means preliminary to scaling, the free ends of the cords passing out over the bracket d. The cords are then slipped into the slot it which in the normal position of the press is inclined obliquely upward toward the dies and seal by its relative adjustment to the lever handle 9 the weight of which causes it to norm-ally hang downward as shown in Fig. 1. Y The lever handle is then turned in a counter-clock-wise direction as indicated in Fig. 1 by the arrows and in the course of the first revolution the free ends of the cords are guided in and under the forming coil on the drum by means of the guide Z so as to be locked by said coil and securely held until by further revolution of the drum the cords are drawn to the desired tension, which can be readily estimated by the pressure on the lever handle, whereupon the seal can be pressed and the operation is completed.

The entire operation is extremely simple and nearly automatic, the cords falling naturally into position in the beginning and being guided automatically and readily released at the conclusion of the process. There is no slipping nor fraying of the cords, the locking grip beingof cord over cord, yet of great strength and positive in character.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. A seal. press having in combination a head part, containing a fixed bed die and a movable die, means for holding a seal between said dies preliminary to sealing, a bracket carried upon said head supporting a concave drum in juxtaposition to said bed die, one end of said drum being free and slotted diametrically for the reception of the fastening cords, a guide adapted to direct the cords upon said drum so as to form superimposed coils thereon and means for rotating said drum.

A seal press having in combination a head part, containing a fixed bed die and a movable die, means for holding a seal be tween said dies preliminary to sealing, a bracket carried upon said head part supporting a concave drum in juxtaposition to said bed die, a diametrical slot in said drum extending from its free end longitudinally to the smallest part of said drum for the reception of the fastening cords, a guide adapted to direct said cords upon the drum so as to form superimposed coils thereon and means for rotating the drum.

A seal press having in combination a head part containing fixed and movable dies, means for holding a seal between said dies preliminary to sealing, a bracket carried upon the side of said head part in juxtaposition to the bed die, a bearing on said bracket, a shaft fitted to said bearing and carrying a fixed concave drum on the inner side and a fixed lever handle on the outer side of said bearing, a diametrical slot in said drum extending from its free end longitudinally to its smallest part and so adjusted with rela tion to said lever handle that in the normal position of the press with the handle hanging downward by its weight said slot will be inclined obliquely upward and inward toward the seal and dies and a guide adapted to direct the fastening cords upon said drum so as to form superimposed coils thereon, as hereinbefore set forth.

4. In a seal press, the combination of a head part containing fixed and movable dies, means for holding a seal between said dies preliminary to sealing, a bracket carried upon the side of said head part in juxtaposition to the fixed die, a bearing in said bracket, a shaft fitted to said bearing having a fixed concave drum mounted upon the inner side and a lever handle fixedly mounted upon the outer side of said bearing, a diametrical slot in the free end of said drunr extending longitudinally therein and adapted through its relation with the lever handle to normally incline toward the dies for the convenient reception of the cords, a downwardly inclined V shaped guide extending from the bottom of the bracket out under the drum in such manner that the cords are guided by it upon the revolution of the drum so as to form superimposed coils thereon, all substantially as hereinbefore specified.
