Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM CUPPY,.
. conveniently permitting said fabric tobe readily returned to its initial position after it is wrung.
Another object of the inventionis to pro vide wringing means which w1ll comprise companion elements that are operatively connected with each other without the use of such permanent fastening devices as screws,
erence indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the mop in operative position.- Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the mop'in wringing position. Fig. 4 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the ratchet wheel. Fig. 6 is a view showing the manner of bending the actuating portion of the wringer where-- by to secure the terminal of said portion to the ratchet wheel.
The vwringer is used in connection with such a well known form of mop as shown herein provided with a handle 1 having a bearing 2 provided with trunnions 3 for supporting the foot 4 having eyes 7 and yoke 6.
The wringer consists of a bracket 12, which is provided with a lateral branch 13 and a brace arm 14 as shown.- The branch portion 13 and the brace arm 14 terminate in a bearing 15 which is longitudinally disposed with relation to the handle 1. The
wringing element is constructed of a single length of wire whose intermediate portion 16 is extended through the bearing 15 so as to freely revolve therein while the lower terminal is disposed beneath the bearing and bent to present a substantially triangular portion 17 which is associated with the upper fold of the mop fabric. The portion 17 has a branch 18 which is abruptly extended away from the intermediate portion 16 of the wringing element so as to form a stop at 19 to hold said element against slidlng movement in one direction in the bearing.
Patented July 20, 19 15.
A ratchet wheel 20 is seated upon the upper end of the bearing 15, being adapted to. revolve thereon and to receive the upper end of the intermediate portion 16 of said wringing element. Said ratchet wheel is provided 1' with an integral lug 21 which has a recess'22 therein, the latter being boundedor defined by spaced inner walls '23 anda single connecting end wall 24 so that one side of the boss is open as at 25. The upper terminal of the wire forming the wringing element is 'bent to prov1de a triangular actuating hand grip 26 having abranch27 which extends through the recess 22 and braced by the wall 24 and associated therewithin'such manner that the Wallwill form a stop to 'hold the wringingfelem ent against movement in another direction in the bearing 15. The grip 26- is also provided with a branch 28, which extends through the recess in the boss and which is positioned between the walls 23 and terminally disposed immediately adjacent the open side 25 of the boss. The branch 28 may be readily bent into the recess when This dog has its nose 31 associated with the ratchet wheel so as to engage the teeth thereof to hold the wringing element against retrograde rotation when wringing the cloth. The tail 32 of the dog and the arm 14 have interposed therebetween a spring 33 whereby the nose of the locking dog will be yield ingly held operatively engaged with the teeth of the ratchet wheel. The tail of the dog terminates in juxtaposition with the handle 1 whereby it can be conveniently en- 1 gaged by the hand of the operator when desired. By constructing the wringing element whereby it will be positively held against sliding longitudinally in the bearing upon the bearing, provided with an integral boss, having a recess bounded by two sides and one end wall, said sides being spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the diameter of the wire of which the wringer element is constructed, a wringer element having a portion mounted to rotate in said bearing, and a portion below the bearing to which a mop cloth can be attached, a grip formed on the element above the bearing and having two angularly disposed branches extending through the recess in the boss, one of the branches terminating at its free end immediately adjacent the open side of the recess and means engaging the ratchet element to hold the same against rotation in one direction.
2. In a mop wringer, a handle, a foot carried by said handle, a bracket extending laterally from the handle and provided with a bearing which extends longitudinally with the handle, a ratchet element rotatably mounted upon the bearing, a wringer element constructed of a single length of Wire bent to provide a cloth attaching portion below the plane of the bearing and an actuating portion above the plane of the bearing,
and an intermediate portion through the bearing and through the ratchet element the said attaching portion having a branch abruptly extending from beneath the bearing and associated therewith so as to form a stop to hold the wringing element against movement in one direction in the bearing, the boss having a recess bounded by two side walls and a single end wall, said side Walls being spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the diameter of the Wire of the wringer element, is constructed, the said actuating portion of the wringer element having a branch extended through the re cess of the boss and a second branch portion terminating at its free end immediately adjacent the open side of the recess and extended into said recess and disposed against the spaced side walls and means engaging the ratchet element to hold the same against rotation.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
