IMPROVEMENT IN WHISK BROOMS.
Specification form/ng part of Letters Patent No. 114,697, dated May 9, 1871i.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Y. MARTIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Whisk Brooms or Brushes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of Which- Figure 1 is a side view,an d Fig. 2 a vertical section, of my invention.
Before my invention small broomsor brushes had been made with varnished or painted handles, and also with a layer ci' broom-corn around the handle, or else a sheet of flexible material, such as leather or cloth, around the handle, formed of wood or by a bunch of broomcorn. i
My invention is a modification of or im provement upon the device last named, and consists in a small broom or brush withk a wrapping of flexible material inclosing the butt-ends of the broom-corn or bers wherel they are connected to the handle, said wrapping also extending along the handle itself,
and being retained by a winding of wire outside of such lexible wrapping, the whole forniing a new article of manufacture that is ornamental in appearance, and the Wrapping of flexible fabric protects the hands from contact with the butt-ends of such bers.
The bunch of' broom-corn or fiber is secured to the handle D by a winding of wire at the head thereof', as usual. The Wrapping H, of flexible material, incloses the head ofthe broom and extends along the handle. An ornamental Abroom or brush made with a'wrappiug of` Hexible material inclosng the head of the broom and extending along the wooden handle, and Ysecured in place by means of a winding of wire, as set forth.
