Be it known that I, JOHN R. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carnegie, in the county of Caddo and State of Gklahoma, have invented .new and useful Improvements in Vheel-Pullers, of which the following is a specification. 4
This invention relates to wheel pullers, the object in view being to produce a simple and effective device of the class described having convenient and reliable opera-ting means whereby a gradual and powerful pullymay be had on a wheel which is mounted fast on a shaft and cannot well be removed by hand, the operating device enabling a step by step movement to be imparted to the jack screw which operates against the end of the shaft from which the wheel is to be removed.
`With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the wheel puller of this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section showing the screw in elevation. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end of the screw. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the whole device showing the operating lever in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the forked pawl.
The wheel puller contemplated in this invention comprises a cross head 1 and a pair of wheel engaging hooks 2 which are preferably forked or slotted to receive the opposite ends of the cross head 1 to which the hooks are preferably connected by means of pins 3 to enable the hooks to be moved into and out of engagement with the rim of the wheel to be removed from a shaft. The cross head 1 is centrally enlarged as shown at 4 and internally threaded to receive a jack screw 5 the shaft engaging end of which is preferably rounded as indicated at 6 so as to bear against the end of a shaft. The opposite end portion of the screw 5 is squared in cross section and made tapering as shown, thereby forming a squared and tapering shoulder 7 which fits into the correspondingly shaped central opening 8 of a wheel 9, the latter being provided on its periphery with ratchet teeth 10 and on its opposite side faces with teeth 11 the purpose of which will presently appear. to receive and admit of the turning and sliding movement thereon of the arms 12 of an operating lever 13, the arms 12 being formed with longitudinal slots 14 to receive the tapered end of the screw. In forming the reduced journals 12, shoulders m and y are' provided at opposite sides of said journal for the purpose of conning or holding in position the arms 12 of the lever 13 and thereby also holding the wheel 9 in proper position upon and in relation to the tapered .and'squared shank of the screw, when the device 1s in actual operation. W'hen the device is not in use, the construction hereinabove described enables the lever 13 and the wheel 9 to be removed from the squared and tapered portion of the screw 5 so that the several parts of the complete tool may be compactly stored or shipped. Pivotally connected to one side of. the lever is a pawl 15 the point of which is adapted to engage the ratchet teeth 10 of the wheel 9. Pivotally connected to and working on the opposite side of the lever 13 is a pawl 16 having a forked or slotted extremity 17 which straddles the wheel 9 and engages the escapement teeth 11 thereof.
In operation, the hooks 2 are engaged with the rim of the wheel to be removed from its shaft and the rounded extremity 6 of the jack screw is engaged with the end of the shaft. The lever 13 is then moved back and forth, the ratchet teeth 10 being engaged by the pawl 15. In this way a gradual step by step movement is imparted to the jack screw until the wheel is loosened from its position on the shaft. When not required for immediate use, the operating lever and the wheel 9 may be slid olf the tapered and squared end portion of the jack screw and the hooks 2 and jack screw may be disconnected from the cross head 1 thus enabling the device to be compactly stored away for future use. The pawl 16 coperates with the teeth 11 to back the jack screw and loosen the wheel puller so that it may be removed from the wheel.
The slots la are of such length and width as to permit the arms of the lever to be passed over the squared and tapered end portion of the jack screw and to be removed therefrom. In assembling the parts, the ratchet wheel is first placed between the forked arms of the lever and then both the wheel and lever are slid upon the squared and tapered end portion of the jack screw out becoming disengaged from the jack screw.
