IMPROVEMENT IN ENVELPES.
-msommnm-cwmmnmmmmnngpuermm- I, HNBY K. Gasse, of Baltimore, county of Baltimore and State ofvMaryland, have made a certain Improvement in letter-Envelopes, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to the manufacture of a letterenvelope with a string or cord embedded aud secured by say suitable adhesive substance inside ofthe foil of the end cr side 'of the envelope; the object being -that such side or end may be ripped open by means of suoli cord, and the envelope thus opened without injury to the inclosures.
Especial reference is here made to the patent of Charles Phelps, dated 17th April, 1858. In that patent one end of the cord hangs outside the envelope,
so that it may b e grasped bythe thumb and linger, or`
otherwise.
Now my invention consists in providing one or both ends of such a cord so embedded with a knot or knots, and having the same wholly within the envelope, vso that the knot or knots shall furnish the handles by which the cord is made te operate as before described.

that dishonest or inquisitive-persons may take hold of l the cord and partially tear open the envelope in order vto discover the nature of the inclosure, and escape suspicion .ordetection because of the obvious liability of the -cord to be so tornby accident. The hanging out of the end of the cord a'ords a constant temptation to such persons.
0n the other hand, when an4 envelope is made with my improvement the knotted ends ofthe cord are sealed up in the envelope,'the corners of which 'are unbroken.
Claim. l
.I claim as my inventon- In au envelope made with acord embedded wholly in the inside of theV end orslde thereof, providing the oord B with one or more knots on either or both ends .thereo substantially as and forthe purpose described.
