Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jaime, i915.
Application filed December 9, 1914. Serial No. 876,282.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ADoLr GUND, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of the city of'New York, borough of they BronX, yin thecounty of Bronx and State of New York, have `invented a new and'Inrv proved Animated Toy, of which the following is a full', clear, and eXact description;
The invention relates to spring motor actuated toys, and its object is to provide a new and improved animated toy, preferably simulating^ a human being oran animal, and arranged'to creep or walk along a floor, ta-l ble xor other support. -f i In ord'erto accomplish the ldesired result, use is made of 'a' driven crank shaft'andfour angular levers having depending members and longitudinal members, the latterjbeing pivotally connected with'the cranks yof the said shaft, the levers 1being mounted krto swing and to slide on fixed pivots, and the depending members of the said levers being adaptedto travel on a floor, table or other support.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying ydrawings forming a part of this specification, in which' similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all'the` views.
Figure 1 is a pe1'spective`-view ofthe animated toy simulating a creepingjbabyf, Fig. f
2 is a similar viewof the animated toy simulating a ,walking animal; Fig. i 3 l isy an en# larged side elevation Vof vrtheactuating mechanism .with onesideof the framelorrcasing removed; Fig. 'i is asectional side eleva-y tion of the sameon the linel--i` of Fig.y 5; and Fig. 5 is'fa sectional plan view of the same on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
The hollow, ,body A ofthe animated toy may be r'of any approved shape, for instance, .v asshown in Fig. l, the saidVbo'dyfA simuvy lates a creeping baby having `articulated arms A l and bent legs A2, of which The hands are approximately spread"r out y'hori- Zontally and extendin the same'plane with the knees -ofthe" legs, and thep' hands and knees are preferably;provided at the under sidek withrubber pads A3, `A,` adapted to' Contacty witha floor, tablel or other surface along which the baby "is toereep'.'` The hollow body A, as shown 2, simulates a walking animal havingarticulate'd front legs A5 and hind legsl A6, preferablyy provided at the solesoffthe ,feetwithfrub-y ber pads A'I and A8, adapted tocontact with a liioor, table or other surface along which the animal is to walk. f
1Within the hollow body A of the ani-y mated toy is secured a frame or casing B, provided with a central compartment B and two side compartments B2, and in the rear end of the said frame or casing B is journaled a winding-up shaft C for winding up a springD secured at its inner end to the saidshaft C and fastened at its outer end to the bottom of the frame or casingy B. One endl of the shaft C extends through the c'orrespondingside of the body A to the outsidefof the'latter, and the outer end'of this shaft@ is made polygonal for the application of a key E to permit of turning lthe shaft Cvwith a view to wind up the spring D.
`The spring D is located in the central compartment B of the frame or casing B and onk the shaft C adjacent the said spring issecured a gear wheel F in mesh with a pinion F secured on a transversely extend-- ing crank shaft Grv providedy at its ends with crankarms G and G2 extending within the side compartments vB2 of the frame or casing B. lThe crank arms G and G2 are connected with longitudinal members II of levers I-Ihaving depending members H2 to which the arms of the baby or the front legs AA5 of-the animal are secured. Each lever II is provided with an upwardly and rearwardly inclined slot IIS engaged by` a pivot pin I secured to the casing By within the ,corresponding outer compartment B2. The crankarms G and G2 are also pivotally connected with longitudinal members J of levers I having depending members J2 attached to the legsA2 of the baby or the rear legsA of the animal. The upper-end of eachlever VJ vis provided with a forwardly and ,upwardly extending slotJ3 into which projects a'pivot pin I attached tothe frame or casing within the corresponding outer compartment B2. The members H2 and J 2 of the levers II and extend throughslots B2-`formed in the bottom of the casing B to guide the ,said membersu H2 and ,J2 during their .forward and backward movement, as hereinafter more, fully explained., Ther depending membersILI2 and J 2 are slightly bentk outwardlysoas tol give the desired stability tothe animated Atoy..,
order ,to theek i the l rotary movementr slide on the said support during their forform of a train of Vgear wheels, of which the first gear wheel K is secured on the shafty G within the central compartment B, and the said gear wheel K is in mesh with a pinion K secured on a shaft K2 journaled on the frame orncasing B. Onthe shaft K2 is secured a gear wheel K3 vin mesh with a pinion K4 secured on a transverse shaft K5 journaled in the frame or casing B, and on the said shaftK5 is secured a gear wheel K6 in mesh with a pinion K1 securedon a trans` verse shaft K8 journaled in the casingB. It willbe noticed that when the spring D is wound up by the-key E and the latter is releasedor removed then the shaft C is rotated and drives the crank shaft Gr in the diretionof the arrow a, so that the crank arms G yand G2 impart a rocking motion to tlie'levers H and J, and at ther same time impart a sliding motion to the said levers on the pivot pins I and I. The crank arms G and kG2 extend diametrically one relatively to the other so ythat the movement given toy other rear lever J. By locating the springv D in the rear portion of the frame or casing B the latter is slightly overweighted yat its rearend relative to thefront end thereof and consequently the depending members H2 of the front levers H are lifted off the floor, table or other support during their forward swinging movement while the depending members J2 of the rear levers J ward movement. It is understood that when the depending members H2 and J2 of the levers H and J have reached the end of their forward stroke they serve as fulcrums for moving the body A forward, the levers sliding on the pivots I and I. lIt is understood that as the arms and legs of the baby er animal move withthe depending members H2 yand J2 of the levers a creeping orwalking motion isv given to the said bodies. By,
lifting the depending members H2 and consequently the arms Af and the front legs A5 of the animated toy a ready forward progress is made as the pads A3, A7 are lifted clear of any slight obstruction'that may be in the path.` rIhe pads yA4L and A2` on the legs A2 or the rear legs A8 are readily dragged in a forward direction over the surface. and thus overcome any slight obstacle that may be in their path without causing the tof)7 to come .to a stop.
By the use of the train of gear wheels K to KV8 above described a practically uniform speed is given to the crank shaft G to insure a uniform forward movement of the animatedtoy as long as the spring D is wound up. n
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
