MECHANICAL TOYI.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Jan. 23,1912;
Application filed May 12, 1911. Serial No. 626,754.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known thatI, GEORGE RIEXINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanical toys. Its object is the production of an; interesting and attractive toy of this kind rep resenting a boxing contest. 7 In the accompanying drawingsz'Figure 1 is a side elevation of the toy witha portion of its base broken away. Fig. Qis'a top plan View thereof, partly in section...
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear View of the toy. Fig. 4 1s a fragmentary vertlcalseotron-of line fll;, F 1g. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts throughout the several views. I A indicates the stationarybase or main frame of the toy which is hollow and preferably rectangular, although it maybe circular or of any other suitable form. 'RisQ mg from the corners of the base are posts B to which a cord 79 is attached extending of the device to reparound the four sides resent the inclosure of the boxing ring or arena.
Within the upper portion of thehollow base is arranged a movable platform or floor C adapted to rock or vibrate for the purpose of actuating certainmovable parts D representmg the' boxers; In
of figures the preferred construction shown in *the drawings,"the platform is pivoted at its front and rear corners to the base, as shown at-e. A rocking motion is imparted to this platform by any suitable means. The preferred mechanism shown :in the drawings comprises a horizontal crankshaft "F 'supported in brackets f f secured to ,the base A and extending through the adjacent wall of the latter. The wrist pin f of thisv crank shaft is connected by a link 9 with alug. g secured to the upper side of the platform. To the outer end of this crank shaft is se- 4 cured a gear pinion 72/ which meshes with a driving gear H having a hand crank h and mounted on a stud 2' carried I arranged above the bracket 1 The. boxing figures D are arranged-in facing-attitude immediately above the platform C and their body-portionsd are pref;
.site posts B. One
arm is rigidlyseoured to I the fore-arm d 1 thereof. The
I the-platform C jits upper end is pivoted by a similar pina to the rigid thigh-portion of thelast-named passes through a vertical *slot Orin said lower leg-section to permit, the latter :torise and fall- 'cut. arm of each figure lsconnected by a;l1nk g by a bracket.
portJ secured at its ends to diagonally oppoarm al of each figure may be made in one piece and pivoted to the body, as shown at is, so as to swing vertically. 1 The inner member (Z of the other the body, while thereof is pivoted to said innermember by a horizontal pin Z, sothat said fore-arm is free to swing toward and from the opposing figure.
, One leg of each with oi'f-rigidly secured to the body portion lower section (Z of the other leg is pivoted by a horizontal pin m, while on the rigid por- V figure is placed forward I .of the other-end may be formed integral 7 0 at-its lower end to alug of tion ofthe body in following the rocking movements of the platform;
V linkxp connects the vertieally-movable leg section of each figure -withthei. arm (Z on the same side "of the body, so as to c ause said armto vibrate vertically 'in unison with the platform, producing a stroke or blow inimitation of the so-called upper The movable member of the other with the upper arm '7" of a bell crank lever pivoted at r to the body of the correspond ing figure. The lower arm 1" of this lever section (it; It will be'observed "thatby is connected by a' link 8 with the lower leg these connections-the rocking movement of i the platform produces a forwardrand back ward movement of the movable fore-arms of the figures in" imitation of the sparring v .movements of boxers. a In; order to 'add to the. attractiveness of the toy, the .headsflas well as the armsare made movable.
, For-this purpose they are pivoted at tto the body portions and their upper portions areconnected by. horizontal I pivots t with the upper ends of the-"bell;
cranks" levers r.
I It will beunderstood ,froin the foregoing heads of the figures vibratein unison with I05 *tliat' both figures are identical in eonstruction; but as they face each other, the jointed I left arm 'of one figure. is drawn back when that, ofthe other ismoved forward and the v .said jointed arms, while theright arm of 2 one .figureissWung, down when that of the other figure is swung up, thus imitating in an interesting manner the blows and gestures of boxers.
It will be noted that by simply turning the driving wheelI-I, both figures are actuated through the mediumof the rocking platform 0 and intermediate connections. As the movable parts of both figures are connected with opposite ends of the same actuator, i. e. the platform C, the toy is correspondingly simplified in construction and its cost of production reduced accordingly.
While the invention is herein shown as applied to figures representing boxers, I do notwish to limit the same to that particular use, as it is obviously applicable within the scope of the claims to figures of similar toys.
- I claim as my invention:
1. In a toy, the combination of a base, a vibratory platform pivoted centrally to the base, a pair of figures supported above the platform and each having a movable part, and actuating connections between the movable parts of the figures and the platform, the connections of the two figures being attached to the plat-form on opposite sides of its pivot.
2. In atoy, the combination of a base, a
V vibratory platform mounted thereon, a figure' supported above the platform and having an upper movable part and a lower legsection movable vertically on the body portion ofthe figure, the lower end of said legsection being pivoted to the platform to vibrate vertically therewith, and means for operatively connecting said upper movable part of the figure with said movable legsection.
3. In a toy, the combination of a base, a vibratory'platform mounted thereon, a figure supported above said platform and having'an arm provided with a jointed forearm, a lever pivoted to the body of the figure and connected with said jointed fore-arm,
and means for operatively connecting said lever with the platform.
4. In a toy, the combination of a base, a vibratory platform mounted thereon, a figure supported above said platform and provided with arms, one of said arms having a jointed fore-arm and the other arm being pivoted to the body of the figure, a lever pivoted to the body of the figure and connectedwith said fore-arm, means for operatively connecting said lever with the platform, andmeans for operatively connecting vibratory platform mounted thereon, a figthe other arm of the figure with the platform.
5. In a toy, the combination of a base, a
ure supported above the platform and having an arm provided with a jointed forearm and a leg-section movable vertically relatively to the body of the figure, said leg-section being pivoted to the platform to vibrate therewith, a bell crank lever pivoted to the body of the figure, a link connecting the upper arm of said lever with said fore-arm, and a second link connecting the lower arm of said lever with said movable leg-section.
6. In a toy, the combination of a base, a vibratory platform mounted thereon, a figure supported above the platform and having a movable head and a movable arm, a 7 lever pivoted to the body of the figure and operatively connected with said platform, and means for operatively connecting the head'and said arm with said lever.
7. In a toy, the combination of a base, a vibratory platform arranged thereon, astationary support carried by the base, said support being arranged above the platform and extending across the same, a figure comprising a body-portion secured to said support and a part movably attached to said body-portion, and means for operatively connecting said movable part with said platform.
8. In a toy, the combination of a base, posts rising from opposite sides thereof, a cross bar mounted on said posts, a vibratory platform supported on the base below said cross bar, a figure mounted on said cross bar and having a movable part, and means for operatively connecting said movable part with the platform.
9. In a toy, the combination of a base, a vibratory platform mounted on the base, a figure supported above the platform and having a movable part, means for operatively connecting said movable part with the platform, a horizontal crank shaft supported on the base below the platform, and an operative connection between said crank shaftand the platform.
