Bic issue, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Mcli/linnville, in the county of Yamhill and State of-Oregon, have invented certain new and "useful Improvements in Combined Grinding-Mills and Presses; and I do declare the following to be-a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled inthe art to which it ap'pertains to make and use-the same.
My invention relates broadly to means for grinding and pressing fruits, vegetables, meats or other edibles, and has for its object to combine'a' common form of grinding mill with a well known-form of press,
in such a manner as to allow the contents discharged from the mill to be delivered directly into'the cylinder of the press, a valve being provided whereby all communication between the mill and press may be obstructed, thus allowing a plunger withwhich the latter is equipped, to be moved inwardly therein to compress the contents thereof.
I'n reducing the invention to its preferred form, I employ a number of novel features of construction and combination hereinafter described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein Figure l is a side elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 isa top plan view thereof; Fig.

n these drawings, constituting a part of the present application, a mill M and a press P are shown as connected to each other, the
formerheing adapted to deliver its contents. into the latter, in which such contents are pressed, to remove any liquids or; juices therefrom.
The-mill M comprises a standard 1 having a clamp 2 at its lower end whereby it may be secured to a, table top or other appropriate support, and a slightly inclined cylinder 3 carried by the upper end of said 6 having anumber of outlet Specification tr Letters Eatent. Paignmd July 33 1915.

Located within the cylinder 3 and adapted to be rotated therein, is a feed worm 7 whose front end is provided with a stub shaft 8 which passes through the bearing opemng 1n the plate 5 and is equipped'with a detachable crank 9. The other or rear end of the worm 7 is likewise provided with av stub shaft indicated by the 'numerallO, the inner end of this shaft being revolubly mounted in the bearing opening at the center of the cutting-disk 6, while its outer" end is reduced and threaded as seen at 11.
' The intermediateportion of the shaft 10 1s squared at 12 and is passed, through a squared opening in the center of a movable cutting disk 13, the latter contacting with the outer side of the fixed disk 6 and having a number of openings 14 through which the contents'of the cylinder 3 are discharged, when the crank 9. is rotated. The disk 13 is here shownas-secured upon the squared portion 12 by thev provision of a thumb nut 15 which is threaded on the reduced end and comes in contact with the edgewalls of the openings 14 in the disk 13, these two disksthen acting as cutters. For a purpose to be described," however, it becomes expedient, at times, to close the outlet openings .14 to prevent .the contents of the cylinder 3 from being discharged therethrough. For
this purpose, a circular valve plate or disk 20 is revolubly mounted upon the hub l'fiof the disk 13, this plate 20 having a plurality of openings 21 adapted to normally aline with the openings 14, but being capable of movement from the position seen in Fig. 5 to that seen in Fig. 6, when such openings are to be closed.
For the purpose of so actuating thedisk 20, which will hereinafter be referred to as the valve plate, said plate is provided with a threadedstud 22 which projects laterally from its edge through an arcuate slot 23 formed in the outer edge of the movable cutting disk 13, this disk extending beyond the annular wall of the cylinder 3 as clearly shown. A nut 24 is then threaded on the free end of the stud 22, this nut having a cone-shaped inner end adapted to bedisposed in either of a pair of countersinks 25 with which the disk 13 is provided, one of these countersinks being located near each end of the slot 23. By this construction, when the nut 24 is loosened, the pin or stud 22 may be shifted within the slot 23, thus shifting the valve plate 20 to open or close the discharge openings of the press, as the case may be. After such adjustment of the plate 20, the nut 24 may again be tightened to dispose its inner end in one of the countersinks 25 as above set forth.
As most clearly seen in the longitudinal section, (Fig. 3) the periphery of the cutting disk 13 is provided with a rearwardly extending annular flange 26 whose rear edge surrounds a perforated cylinder 27 constituting the receiving cylinder of the press P. Furthermore, the circumference of the flange 2G is formed with a worm 28, this worm being engaged by the teeth on a pair of longitudinal rack bars 29 which lie parallel to the cylinder 27 and which are disposed one on each side thereof.
The rear ends of the rack bars 29 are pivoted at 30 to a transverse bar 31 whose central portion is in the form of a split nut 32 whose upper half only is equipped with screw threads, its lower half being smooth.'
This split nut 32 receives a threaded shaft 33 which projects centrally into the cylinder 27 and which carries a plunger 34 on its inner end, while its outer end is equipped with ahand wheel or crank 35.
For the purpose of effectively supporting and holding the rack bars 29, a pair of guide cars 36 are cast integrally with the opposite sides of the cylinder 3, near its rear end, (see more particularly Figs. 2 and 4). These ears are provided with rectangularopenings through which the front ends of the rack bars 29 project, said front ends being here shown as mounted to slide within guide plates ,37, these platesbeing substantially channel-shaped in cross section and being swiveled at 38 to the inner ends of a pair of thumb screws 39. By so mounting the rack bars 29, they may be effectively held in engagement with the worm 28 by threading the thumb screws 39 inwardly or they may be shifted outwardly out of engagement with said worm by turning said screws in a retrograde direction.
In -addition to the parts above described, alpan 40 is preferably provided beneath the perforated cylinder 27, this pan being substantially semi-cylindrical in contour and having an inclined bottom provided with an outlet 41 at its lowest point, which outlet may be screened if desired. The rear end wall of the pan is dished slightly at its up- .per edge to pass beneath the threaded shaft on the cylinder 3 near the ears 36, while the flange 43 bears against a depending semi-circular flange 46 which is preferably cast integrally with the under side of the cylinder 3, said flange 46 being preferably provided with an arcuate groove in its rear face to receive the flange 43.
In applying the machine to use, the food products to be ground arefed into the mill- M and the crank 9 is rotated, thus grinding such products and discharging them into the cylinder 27 of the press P, it being understood that the valve plate 20 now stands in open position, that the plunger 34 is re-- trac'ted in said cylinder 27, and that the rack bars 29 are moved out of engagement with the worm 28. This operation is continued until the cylinder-27 is filled with the ground material, after which the valve plate 20'is closed, and the plunger 34 is either moved inwardly by rotating the screw 33 bythe hand wheel 35, or by actuating the thumb screws 39 to engage the rack bars 29 with the worm 28, after which rotation of the crank 9"-will move said plunger inwardly as will be readily understood by inspection of the drawings; During its inward movement, this plunger operates in conjunction with the valve plate 20 to compress the contents of the cylinder 27 and to extract therefrom any liquids or juices, reducing such contents to a pulp. The liquids will now run through the perforations in the cylinder 27 and into the pan 40, from which they will be discharged through the outlet 41 into an appropriate container disposed beneath the-latter.
From the foregoing description. taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that although two well known types of machines have been combined in a single device, numerousalterations and additions have been made to ohtain the best results. Furthermore, it will be seen that such results are readily obtainable.

A device of the class described comprising a mill and a press including a pair of alined communicating cylinders disposed end to end, means within one cylinder for grinding the contents thereof and discharging it into the other cylinder, a plunger in the last named cylinder, and a rotatable valve plate interposed between the two cylinders and adapted to allow or obstruct communication between the two.
9. A device of the class described comprising a mill and a. press including a pair of alined cylinders, a rotatable shaft projecting through one.of said cylinders and iarrying av rotatable cuttingdisk having a plurality of openings, a plunger within the other cylinder, and a valve plate contacting with said rotatable cutting disk and having openings adapted to aline with the openings therein or to be disposed laterally therefrom, combined with means for controlling the movement of said valve plate.
10. A device of the class described comprising amill including a. cylinder having an open delivery end, a feed worm extending longitudinally through the cylinder and having on one end an operating crank, a cutter at the other end of said feed woim, a press including a pressing cylinder disposed in longitudinal alinement with the aforesaid cylinder, a plunger in said pressing cylinder. and plunger actuating means carried by the plunger and the aforesaid cutter.
11. A device of the class described comprising a mill including a cylinder having an open delivery end, a feed worm extending longitudinally through the cylinder and 7 having on one end an operating crank. a cutter at the other end of said feed worm, a. press including a cylinder disposed in longitudinal alinement with the aforesaid cylinder and adapted to receive the contents thereof, and a plunger operable toward said cutter and confined in the second 5 mentioned cylinder.
