To all whom 'it may concern Beit known that a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of llinois, have invented certain 'new and usefulvlmprovements in Line-Chalkers, of which the following is a specification.`

This invention relates to an improvement in a device for chalking lines, as used by car-` penters, gardeners and other artisans. The principal object of this invention is the provision of such a device which is simple in construction, efhcient in operation and easy to manipulate. i A further object of such an invention is thel provision of such a device which is so constructed that it may run along yon a guide line for chalking the same, the action being due to gravity. i

A. further object is the provision of such a device, including a handle portion which is weighted, a body portion provided with a chalk receptacle and having rollers mounted therein, with suitable apertures to providefa passage for a line throughthe receptacle, and to permit the line to engage' the rollers, whereby the device may move along the inclined line by gravity, chalk being applied thereto.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and which illustrate apreferred embodiment of my invention, it being understood however that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from my inventive idea.

The body `member 3 is grooved to provide recesses 19 for the string, and as indicated in Fig. 1, the string passes through the slot 18, bearing on the second pulley or wheel 16 and out lthrough the slot or recess 18.

The operation of this device is readily understood and merely comprises filling the receptacle with chalk through the door la, threading the line through the passage provided, and then holding the line at an inclination. The device will then travel along the inclined line due to gravity, the weighted handle being provided to over-come the frictional resistance of the line and the pulley or wheel. By this means the line is chalked without the necessity of moving the device along the line manually, which is a manifest advantage to workmen, particularly in dangerous places, such as in marking a roof for shingling, etc.

l also provide the loose wheel 19 having the grooved periphery, as shown, which is adapted to ride or `move on the cord in the receptacle portion of the device fitting between the sides thereof. rlhis wheel or pulley 19 forms a weighted member holding the line in contact with the chalk` at all times. As it is free, it may ride von the cord when there is merely a small amount of chalk left in the receptacle or compartment.

llt is therefore seen that l have provided a device which is simple in construction and operation, being composed of few parts and easy to manipulate.

This application is filed as a continuation of my prior application Serial Number 751,900 filed March 3, 1918, in so far as the subject matter is common.

What l claim is,-

1. A line chalker including a body portion and a handle portion, the latter being weiohted, said body portion being formed of two parts, one having a peripheral flange and partition flanges near each end thereof and the other being of the same oonformation and fitting tightly against said flanges whereby a receptacle and a plurality of compartments are formed, wheels mounted in said compartments, said partition flanges having openings therethrough in line with said wheels and said peripheral flange being out away in alinement with said wheels to permit the passage of the line through the device.

2. A line chalker including an elongated body portion and a weighted lhandle portion, said body portion being formed of two parts, one having a flange extending entirely around the same, said flange being reduced at each end of the body part, and partition flanges extending from said first mentioned flange to the ends of said reduced flanges, the other part of said body portion being of the same conformation and fitting tightly against said first mentioned flange and having partition flanges corresponding to said first mentioned partition flanges and also having flanges at the ends corresponding to the reduced flanges at the ends ofA said first mentioned part, the two parts providing areceptacle and a plurality of compartments one at each end, wheels mounted in said compartments, said compartments and receptacle having a passage through them in alinement with said wheels for the line to be chalked.

3. A line chalker including an elongate body portion and a Weighted handle porltion, said body portion being formed of two parts, one having a flange extending entirely around the same, said flange being reduced at each end of the body part, and partition anges extending from said first mentioned flanges to the ends of said reduced flange, the other part of said body portion being of the same conformation and fitting tightly against said first mentioned flanges and having partition flanges corresponding to said first mentioned partition flange and also having flanges at the ends corresponding to the reduced flanges at the ends of said first mentioned part, the two parts providing a receptacle and a plurality of compartments one at each end, said reduced flanges on the first part and said flanges on the second part of said body portion terminating a slight distance apart to provide a slotted entrance into said compartments.

4. A line chalker including an elongated body portion and a handle portion, the latter being weighted, said body portion being formed of two parts, one having a peripheral flange and partition flanges near each end of the body part and the other being of the same conformation and fitting tightly against said flanges whereby a receptacle and a plurality of compartments are formed, wheels mounted in said compartments, said partition flanges having openings therethrough in line with said wheels and said peripheral flange being cut away in alinement with said wheels to permit the passage of the line through the device, said peripheral flange being cut away to provide an opening into said receptacle, a door member therefor pivoted to one of said parts and a spring member normally holding said door member shut.

5. A line challrer including an elongated body portion and a handle portion, the latter being weighted, said body portion being formed with a receptacle and separate compartments at each end, wheels mounted in each compartment, said body portion having a passage through said compartments and said receptacle in alinement with said wheels for a line to be challed, and a loose weighted member in said receptacle adapted to ride on the cord to force it into contact with the chalk.

6. A line challrer including two parts, one having a flange extending entirely around wheels journaled in said compartments, said receptacle and compartments having a passage through them in alinement with said Wheels toreceive a line to be chalked.
