Description

UNITED STATES FATENT OFFICE.
CURTIS IVI. WILLOCK, OF DEFIANCE, OI-IIO, ASSIGNOR TO 'II-IE AMERICAN STEEL n PACKAGE COMPANY, OF DEFIANGE, OI-IIO, ACORPORATION 0F OI-IIO.
PACKING-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 27,1909. Serial No. 509,784.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CURTIS M. WILLooK, a citizen of' the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metal packing cases especially designed for the transportation and storage of liquids contained in bottles and similar vessels.
The invention relates more particularly to improvements in hinged lids or covers provided with a marginal or peripheral beading adapted to shut down inside and in the same plane with the beading formed by the upper edges of the ease side walls, whereby a second strengthening beading is formed within adjacent to and supporting said last mentioned beading substantially as shown in Kruse Patent No. 870,728, of November 12, 1907.
The hinged cover is locked or latched in its closed position by means of a spring latch-bar normally engaging the free end of the cover midway between the outer corner portions thereof substantially as shown in Kruse Patents Nos. 786,299, and 892,062, of April i, 1905, and June 30, 1908, respectively, the primary object of the invention being to reinforce the free end or side of the hinged cover so as to prevent the outer corners of the cover from being forced or pried upwardly out of `true horizontal alinement with the central portion of the closed lid or cover by unscrupulous parties in the act of gaining access to the case contents while in transportation or storage.
`With the above mentioned ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l, is a perspective view of the upper portion of a case body provided with a hinged lid or cover constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3, a sectional view of the lid or cover. Fig. 4, a cross sectional view of a modified form of cover truss members. Fig. 5, a similar view of another modified form of' same.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The case body may be of any suitable and convenient form and has its side walls 1,
preferably, provided at itsupper marginaly edges with an inwardly extending lid supporting flange 2, and curled about a wire 3, forming a peripheral beading il.
The lid or cover 5, has itsfmarginal edges bent or curled about a wire 6, forming a pe`- lripheral beading 7. The lidv or cover 5, is
secured at its rear by means of hinge straps 8, which take over the wire 3, secured within f the beading 4, formed Vabout the upper marginal edges of the case body.
The marginal edges of the cover are adapted to rest upon the lid supporting' flange 2, and the peripheral beading 7, is adapted to shut down inside and in the same plane with the peripheral beading 4:, whereby a second strengthening beading is formed within adjacent to and supporting said beading.
rlhe free end of the cover is adapted to be latched and locked in its closed position by means of a spring latch-bar 9, in the present instance, taking over the wire 3, midway between the outer corner portions 5a, thereof as shown.
As a means for preventing the prying up of the corner portions 5a, of the cover when the same is closed the free end or side of the hinged cover is strengthened and reinforced by means of truss members, said truss members, in the present instance, registering with each other and comprising a strutbar or member 10, and a tie-bar or member 11, said members 10 and 11, in the present instance, extending transversely over and between the corner portions 5a, and secured to each other and to the free end or side of the cover by means of rivets 12.
It will be observed that the strut bar or member 10, is interposed between and abuts against the peripheral beading 7, at the sides of the cover and it should be understood that one or the other of the trussing Patented July 13, 1915.
members may be dispensed with if suiicient posed upon the free side or end of the hinged cover, it is obvious that this portion of the cover is greatly strengthened and reinforced throughout and the corner portions 5, thereof will be held in true horizontal alinement for the purposes desired.
F rom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
l. In a packing case, a hinged and beaded cover having its free side reinforced by a pair of transversely disposed registering truss bars arranged above and below said cover, one of said truss members abutting against the beading of said cover at the outer corners thereof.
2. In a packing case, a peripherally beaded hinged cover, and a pair of transversely disposed registering truss members at the free side of said cover, one of said truss members abutting against said beading at the outer corners of said cover whereby to reinforce and to hold the same in true hori- Zontal alinement.
3. In a packing case, a case body, a hinged cover therefor, means for engaging the free edge of said cover midway between the outer corners thereof when closed, and a transverse truss member riveted above the free side of said cover and extending between said corners whereby the latter are reinforced in the same plane with the intermediate portions thereof.
4. In a packing case, a case body, a hinged peripherally wired cover having the free side thereof transversely trussed by means of channeled strut and tie bars riveted to each other through said cover, means for supporting said cover in its closed position within and Hush with the upper marginal edges of said case body, and a latch meniber engaging said peripheral wire at the free edge of said cover when closed.
5. In a packing case, a case body having its upper marginal edges crimped into a lid supporting fiange and curled about a wire forming a peripheral beading, a peripherally beaded hinged cover mounted on said lid supporting iiange within said first mentioned beading and flush with the same, a latch member normally engaging the free side of said cover midway between the outer corner portions thereof, and a transversely extending strut bar secured above the free side of said cover and extending over and between said corner portions and abutting against said cover beading.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
E. J. ALLEN, M. PARTEE.
