MEANS FOR PROMOTING COMBUSTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed July 29, 1914. Serial No. 853,929.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRED OLsEN and Axnr. LYBERG, citizens of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Promoting Combustion, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in means for promoting combustion, in the use of which oxygen is mixed with the products of combustion in the fire box to assist in consuming the same.
The main object of the present invention is theprovision of a means mounted in the back head of the furnace and through which the air is admitted and specifically directed within the fire box, provision being made for increasing the blast at will.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation, illustrating the application of the improved means. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View, illustrating the application of the means. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a section through the nozzle. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, the improved means is shown as made up of two distinct parts, that is a nozzle 1 and an injector section 2. The nozzle 1 comprises a cylindrical body 3 terminating at the forward end in the annular shoulder 4, from which the body extends in a forward and downward direction to provide a delivery nozzle 5, the free or delivery end of which is of oval shape, as shown. The free or rear end of the body 3 is exteriorly threaded at 6 and the injector section has a forward extension 7 interiorly threaded for connection with the body and beyond which said section 2 is gradually enlarged and downwardly curved, terminating. in a flaring mouth or entrance 8. The upper wall of the section 2 is thickened at 9 to provide for the formation therein of a conduit 10, opening within the section 2 in a restricted port 11, the main length of the conduit opening toward and in the direction of the body 3.
The improved device, of which there may be any number used, is removably mounted in the tube 12 connecting the header plates of the back head, the device being held in fixed relation therein by reason of the shoulder 4: bearing against one end of the tube and a projection 7 bearing against the opposing end.
In use, the device will direct oxygen over the fuel bed and at an angle thereto so as to thoroughly mix with the products of combustion, the conduit 10 being adapted to be connected with any source of air under pressure, whereby the neutral pressure of the device may be increased at will and to any desired extent.
What is claimed is The combination with the spaced plates of a furnace head, of a tube securedtherein, means for promoting combustion comprising a body removably seated in the tube and having a circumferentially notched flange tightly abutting one end of said tube, a nozzle integral with the body and projecting in advance of one of the plates, an injector section removably secured to the body and provided with a circumferential flange tightly abutting the remaining end of said tube, and a bolt passing through the notch in the flange of saidv body and threaded into one of said spacedplates.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
FRED I OLSEN. AXEL LYBERG.
