Description
. like,
FELIX J. yivrexnnini, or siiirulfriin,"wiisiiivcrron.'`
To all who/m, it may concern.'
Be itknown that I, FELIX J. MCKENNA, citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vashington, have invented a certain 'new and useful Improvement in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in burners which are adapted to burn fluid fuel, such as crude oil, kerosene, gasolene and the and the object of my invention is. to provide a burner which shall be more simple in its plan of construction more easily cleaned and more eiiicient in its operation than are burners heretofore made, and which shall be adapted to burn dierent mineral oil products; and a further object of my invention is to provide a burner that may be operatively disposed to heat different kinds of steam boilers or other devices.
I accomplish 4these objects by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings whereiii- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a burner embodying my invention as it'appears when attached to a fuel supply pipe;
Fig. 2 is a view of thev same in elevation of the delivery end;
Fig. 3 is a view of the same in longitudinal mid-section on broken line 3, 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view of the same in crosssection on broken line 4:, 4 of Fig. 3; U
Fig. 5 is a view lof the same in longitudinal mid-section on broken lines 5, 5 of Fig.
3; and
Fig. 6 is a view in perspective of a detail of my invention. y
Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, a fluid fuel burner is formed of two separable parts 7 and 8 to provide a mixing chamber 9 having an internally screwthreaded inlet passageway that extends through the outer end portion of the part 8, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, which inlet passageway is adapted to screw on to one end of a fluid fuel supply pipe 10, as shown in Fig. 1, which pipe 10 may be-extended to a source of a combustible mixture, as oil and air and steam under pressure.
The chamber 9 is also provided with an outlet passageway 11 of the form of a narrow slot disposed to extend through the outer end portion of the part 7 and trans- Specification of Letters Patent.

Application 1ed February 19, 1917. Serial JNo. 149,701.v
versely thereof, the opposite end walls of said slot converging inwardly to said chainber 9 to form said passageway 11 at a point adjacentv to said chamber ,9 as indicated Y more clearly inFigs. 5 and 6.
In order that thepassageway 11 maylbe readily cleaned, one of its side walls consists of afremovable block 12 while its opposite side wall is integralwith the part 7, as
shownl moreclearly in Figs.'2 andV 3.
The block 12, as shown `in Fig. 6,is pro-- vided with a packing made of a piece of soft metal wire 13, as of copper wire, bent into the form of a semi-circle, which forms a semi-circular ridge on its bottom side surface, and on its side opposite thepassageway 11 isa recess 14 which is adapted to receive the conical end of a screw 15 that is screwed through a lug 16 which is integral with the part 7 as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, whereby the conical end of said screw 15 engages with the wall of the recess 14 in such manner thatrthe block 12 is forced to its proper position to make a tight joint between the packing wire 13 and its seat on l the part 7 and to form one wall of the passageway 11. l
As shown in Figs. 3 and 5,the wall of the chamber 9 diverges from the inlet passage way through the outer end of the part 8 to the inner end of said part S and it converges from the inner end of the part 8 to the outlet passageway 11.
Clamped between the surface of the inner end of the part 8 and a shoulder formed on the inner side of the part 7 are the four radial lugs 17 which are integral with a concentrically disposed deflector 18 thatpis tapered in both of opposite directions from said lugs 17 to form two conical portions whose bases are integrally united, whereby the passageway through the chamber 9 will be expanded in the central portion of said chamber 9 and be contracted at each of the opposite ends thereof. v
In the operation of a burner embodying my invention as illustrated and described, a combustible mixture (as, for instance, a' mixture of vaporized `mineral oil and air or steam) under pressure is conducted by the pipe 10 into the inlet passageway of the part 8 to impinge against the pointed end of the deflector 18 and thence flow through the annular passageway vsurrounding said deflector 18 to and out through the narrow slot forming the outlet passageway 11 of the part 7 from which it is emitted in such form that when ignited it will make a flame of a form that resembles the tail of a fish.
The deflector 18 serves thoroughly to' intel-mingle the ingredients of the combustible mixture since such mixture in the vcourseof its passage through the annular space surrounding said deliector 18 is caused iirst to be permitted to expand and then to be contracted in volume.
.1f it be desired to cleanthe burner the parts 7 and 8 may be separated in an obvious manner to remove the deflector 18 thus gaining access to the chamber 9, and the passageway 11 may be cleaned upon removing the block 12 by unscrewing the screw 15 to disengage it from said block 12.
4Cbviously,` changes may be made in the dimensions of parts of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
l/V hat I claim is:
An oil burner of the class described, which embodies an inlet and an outlet passageway; a mixing chamber forming a passageway between said outlet and said inlet passageway; a tapered delector concentrically disposed within said mixing chamber; a removable block disposed adjacent said outlet end to afford a means for cleaning said outlet passageway, said block having a conical recess therein, and a radially disposed screw having a conical end engaging' into said recess to press and hold the block in position.
1n witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my naine this 6th day of February, A. D., 1917. l
FELX J. MCKENNA.
