M. L. MOORE.
NEEDLE THREADING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 3, 1914.
1,145,258.. Patentd July 6, 1915.
MARIAN L. MOORE, OF NICKELSVILLE, VIRGINIA.
NEEDLE TI-IREADING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. July 6,1915.
Application filed July 3, 1914. Serial No. 848,855.
This inventlon relates to improvements in I needle threading devices and has particular application to a device of the class described for threading the needles of sewing machines.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of sewlng machine needle threaders and to provide a device whereby the thread may be drawn through the eye of the needle rapidly and conveniently.
- It is also my purpose to provide a needle threading device for sewing machines which may be manufactured and marketed at a minimum expense and which Wlll operate efliciently and effectively under all conditions and whereby the possibilty of the accidental withdrawal of the thread from the device is reduced to a minimum.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists .in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the device showing the same applied to the needle. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 1s a view in elevation of the side oppbsite from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross sectional view on the line 5-5101? Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a viewin end elevation of the device. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the'blank from which the device is made.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, A designates my improved needle threading device as an .entirety. This device is preferably formed of a single sheet of metal bent upon itself upon the longitudinal center line thereof to form side plates-1, 2 placed in face 'to face contact. The side plate 1 at one end is offset relatively to the adjacent end portion of the remaining plate as at? and the end. edge of such offset portion is inclined downwardly as at 4 to provide a guiding edge, while the ofiset portion, at the rear of such guiding edge is formed with a slot 5 parallel with the inclined edge 4 and having the upper end opening onto the upper end edge of the offset portion 3 and the lower end communicating with a 'circular aperture 6. The front wall of the slot 5 at the-upper end thereof is bent outwardly as at 7 so that an entrance mouth to the slot will be provided whereby the thread may be drawn into the aperture 6. The adjacent end portion of the plate 2 is formed centrally with .a'
longitudinal slot 8 extending a slight distance beyond the aperture 6 and having the side walls thereof formed with coinciding grooves 9 alining with the aperture 6 in the offset end portion 3 of the side plate 1 and forming, in effect, an aperture. The upper edge portion of the plate 2, that is the portion above the longitudinal slot 8g is projected .outwardly beyond the adjacent end portion of the plate 2 in the form of a finger 10 and the outer end of the finger -10--is formed with a depending lug 11. Disposed between the confronting faces of the plates 1 and 2 and secured in position by means of rivets 12 or the like passed through such plates is a hook 13 having the bill 14; thereof disposed between the spacedend portions of the plates 1 and 2 in juxtaposition to the.
aperture 6 and the aperture formed by the companion grooves 9 in the confronting walls of the longitudinal slot 8.
h In practice,--the spaced end portions of the plates 1 and 2 form an entrance mouth adapted to receive the eye portion of the sewing machine needle to be threaded and as the device is passed onto the needle the hook 13 extends through the eye thereof. The thread is now drawn into the slot S in the side plate 2 and up over the inclined edge 4 of the offset end portion 3 oftheside plate 1 and then passed into the-slot, 5 and aperture 6. As the thread enters the aperture 6 in the ofi'set' portion 3 thefiadjacent part of the thread is disposed'in the aperture formed by the companion grooves 9,
While the portion of the thread between the spaced ends of the plates lies in the bill of the hook. The threading ,device' is now moved bodily away from the needle and as the hook leaves the eye the thread is drawn through the latter, as will be readily underthread from the device in the initial movement of the thread into the slot 8 is eliminated, while the outwardly bent'portion 7 of the particular wall of the slot 5 serves to facilitate the passage of the thread into the slot and eliminate mutilation of the thread as the same enters the slot.
7 From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent.
It will be seen that I have provided a needle threading device whereby the needles of sewing machines may be readily and quickly threaded and wherein the parts are so correlated and arranged as to eliminate the possibility of derangement and reduce the cost of construction to a minimum.
1 claim:
A needle threading device comprising two side plates having the end portions thereof spaced apart to provide an entrance mouth adapted to receive a needle, the said end portion of one of the plates having the outer edge inclined and being formed with a slot parallel with the inclined edge and terminating in a circular aperture, the adjacent end portion of the remaining plate being formed with a longitudinal slot, terminating beyond the aperture in the first-mentioned end portion and having the opposite walls thereof formed with companion grooves providing an aperture coaxial with the first aperture, a hook between said plates and having the bill thereof projecting into said mouth and disposed in juxtaposition to said apertures and designed to pass through the eye of the needle,- the slots and apertures in the spaced end portions of said plates serving to guide the thread into the bill of the hook in advance of the needle eye whereby the thread will be pulled through said eye in the movement of the device to withdraw the hook from the eye.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
