VACUUM PUMP.

VACUUM-PUMP.
Specification of LettersPatent,
Patented July 6, 1915.
Application filed November 10, 1911 Serial No. 659,497.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that; I, C mnn is BRENT, a subject of the King of England, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain'new'and useful Improvements in vacuum-Pumpsyof which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vacuum pumps utilized in vacuum cleaners.
More specifically the invention relates to a pump comprising a casing provided with a suitable down-pipe structure having a water nozzle mounted at the upper end and adapted to engage the blades of a rotor rotatably mounted in a casing secured and preferably in communication with the downpipe structure. It is preferable to give these blades a little turn toward the stream to facilitate the action of the water against the same.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the casing showing the rotor in elevation; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken at another angle showing the blades in elevation.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of parts may be employed so long as they possess the necessary characteristics, but I have shown one form in the drawings which is highly effective in operation, and in such embodiment 1 represents a suitable down-pipe member having threaded in the upper end thereof a nozzle 2 provided with an opening 3 adapted to project its stream down the pipe. The lower end of the pipe is externally threaded for receiving a down pipe extension 1. The side of this down pipe member 1 is provided with a flat surface 5 having a vertically disposed opening Gwhich communicates with a rotor casing 7 secured to the flat surface 5 by means of screws 8 passing through a flange 9 forming a part of the casing 7. The casing 7 is further provided on one side with a boss 10 to receive a screw 11 forming the shaft for supporting a rotor hub 12 which is provided with suitable blades 13, the ends 14 of which. curve upward toward the nozzle as shown. The opposite side of the casing ,7 is provided with a threaded nipple 15 receiving a suit-- the downward flow of the water through the down pipe construction.
It has been found in use of the foregoing device that a very effective degree of vacuum is produced with a large volume of air han dled by reason of the fact that when the air inlet is closed, as in operation, a small vol ume of water collects in the casing 7 where it is churned up so to speak with the air forming a foam which passes down through the pipe 4. The pipe 4 should be of a sufneent length to produce a reasonably high vacuum, the down pipe being the vacuum producing feature while the rotor accounts for the large volume of air handled.
Having described my invention,Iclaim 1. In a vacuum pump, a casing forming a single air admission and air and water mixing chamber, an inlet member communieating with said casing, a liquid nozzle mounted to project a stream of liquid into said casing, an air and water discharge pipe leading from said casing, and a single rotor mounted in said casing in a position to be driven by a stream of liquid from the nozzle and to draw air in through the inlet.
2. In a vacuum pump, a casing forming a single air admission and air and water mixing chamber, an inlet member communi: eating with said casing, a liquid nozzle mounted to project a stream of liquid into said casing, an air and water discharge pipe in alinement with the nozzle and leading from said casing, and a single rotor mounted in said casing in a position to be driven by a stream of liquid from the nozzle and to draw air in through the inlet.
3. A vacuum pump comprising a casing forming a single chamber for the admission and mixture of liquid and air, a down pipe structure secured to said casing and in open communication therewith, a liquid nozzle mounted in the upper end of said down pipe structure, a discharge pipe mounted at the opposite end, an inlet member communt eating with substantially the center of said casing, and a single rotor mounted within I Copies of this patent may be obtained for said casing and consisting ofa v, supporting the inlet opening and miXed with water in the casing.
4.. In a Vacuum pump, a casing, an inlet member entering the same, a rotormounted within said casing and having its center substantially in alinement with the air inlet member, a down pipe structure secured to and communicating with said casing, a nozzle mounted in the upper; end of said down vpipe structure and having its discharge opening in alinement, with the same, and a discharge pipe secured to the lower end of said down pipe structure. I In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses as follows.
