Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. NIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at 2940 Palmyra street, in the city of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to doors for freight or other cars or vehicle.
One object is to provide a car door embodying among other characteristics means whereby the door cannot become accidentally lost or easily pried ofl of its mountings.
With the above and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side vertical sectional view. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevation partly in section illustrating one of the lower corners of the door. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through one of the corners of the door illustrating the brackets in which the rollers are mounted.
Mounted on the side of the car below the opening 2 is a rail A. for the slidable support of the door 5. This rail A is preferably spaced from the sides of the car to provide for a clearance so that snow, dirt and sparks may fall between the rail A and the side of the car. For the purpose of illustration the rail A may be in the nature of a T bar including the horizontal flange 9 and the vertical flange 6, the latter extending above and below the horizontal flange 9. This T- bar may be supported in any preferred manner. The spacing blocks 8 may be secured to the car in any desired manner. The door 5 is adapted to slide on the flange 9 of the T-rail. To reduce friction between the sliding door 5 and the flange 9 I preferably mount rollers 10 and 11 at the lower corners of the door. These rollers may be journaled in suitable metallic or other corner irons each composed of sections 12 and 13 which are secured to the lower corners of the door 5 in any suitable manner, not only for the support of the rollers 10 and 11 but to reinforce and protect the lower corners of the door against damage. Guide members 14 are formed at the rear of the corner irons and are curved to engage the inner upper edge of the vertical flange 6 of the rail A, to hold the lower edge of the door positively on the rail and also to prevent the door from being removed or pried oif of its mounting.
The door is preferably hung at its upper edge by means of an angle iron 15 which slidably overlaps an angle iron 16 secured by means of suitable fastenings 17 along the top of the car above the opening 2. The angle iron 15 may be secured to the door 5 in any suitable manner. By this means the door is properly hung and is held positively against lateral outward movement at its upper edge. These overlapping hanger irons 15 and 16 are so positioned and associated as to prevent sleet, rain, snow or sparks from entering the car 1 through the opening 2. i
What is claimed is:
The combination of a car having a door opening, door for said opening, spacing members arranged in series along the outer side of said car and extending below the said door opening, a rail supported by said spacing means and extending below the car in spaced relation from the same, said rail including a longitudinally extending, horizontal flange and vertical flanges, said vertical flanges being spaced from the car, corner irons embracing the lower edge of said door and disposed flush with the vertical edges of the same, rollers carried by the corner irons and projecting outwardly beyond the vertical edges of the door and below the lower edge of said door for movement upon the horizontal flange of the rail, and fingers struck rearwardly from the corner irons for engaging the inner edge of one of the vertical rails for guiding the door thereon.
