RAILWAY-SWITOI-I-OPERATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1'7, 1912.
Application filed January 6, 1912. Serial No. 669,794.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. HEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caldwell, in the county of Sumner and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Switch- Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an im roved switch operating device especially a apted for use on street cars to enable a motorman to operate a switch without the necessity of stopping the car, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the front portion of a car provided with a switch operating device constructed in accordance with my invention, the standard being shown in raised position in full lines and in lowered, operating position in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 1, and showing a portion of the track in plan; Fig. 3 is a similar view on the plane indicate d by the line bb of Fig. 1, also showing a portion of the track in plan; and Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of my improved switch operating device, showing a portion of the frame of the car platform in section.
For the purposes of this specification a portion of a track is indicated at 1 and a branch or side track at 2, a movable switch rail being shown at 3.
In accordance with my invention I provide a vertically movable standard 4 which is arranged in one corner of the platform frame 5 of a car and is guided between the corner of the car frame, and a guide casing 6, the latter being a single piece of metal,
which may be cast or wrought, and formed with two side walls 7 8 and also with bearing flanges 9 which lie against and are secured to the inner sides of the angularly' disposed members of the frame. The standard 4 is provided at its upper end with an enlarged head 10, from one side of which projects a handle 11 which facilitates the raising and lowering of the standard. The standard is provided at a suitable distance from its upper end with a locking notch 12 which may be engaged by a locking arm 13 which is pivotally mounted on the car platform. At the lower end of the standard and projecting from the outer side thereof is a shoe 15 which is triangular in form, projects laterally from the outer side of the standard and presents its hypotenuse or laterally beveled side to the free end of the switch rail when the car approaches the latter. Ordinarily the standard is supported in a raised position by the locking arm and notch and when the car approaches the switch the motor-man disengages the looking arm from the notch, thereby causing the standard to drop so as to arrange its shoe in aposition to engage the free end of the switch rail and thereby move the switch rail outwardly to the adjacent main track rail, so as to direct the car around the curve of the side or switch track.
It will be understood from the foregoing that my improved switch operating device may be readily operated by the motorman and without the necessity of stopping the car.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
The combination with a car frame embodying a platform having members arranged at a right angle relative to each other, a guide housing of strap formation formed with right angular retaining members and attaching members secured to the frame members at the corner thereof with the retaining members spaced from the corner and forming therewith, a rectangular casing, a vertically movable standard mounted within said casing and freely movable therein, said standard being provided at its lower end with a switch operating shoe and formed intermediate of its end with a notch, and a latch pivotally mounted on the platform for engagement in said notch, whereby to hold the standard in raised inoperative position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD T. HEBB.
