PULLEY-BLocK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1935.
Application filed October 7, 1914. Serial No. 865,578.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERT C. BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of ()regon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pulley-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pulley blocks.
and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
More particularly the block is designed for cable ways wherein cables are being passed through the block at very high speed in the operation of the hoisting or carrying devices.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows:
Figure 1 shows a section on the line 11 in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 a side elevation of the pulley block. Fig. 3 a plan view.
The pulley wheel 1 is mounted on .a bearing pin 2, the bearing pin extending through the perforations 3 in the block sides- 4. The bolt 5 extends through the bearing pin 2 and is secured in place by a nut 6. The block sides have the upwardlyextending ribs 77 which terminate in cars 8-8. The shackle 9 in the form of a loop termiynates in the eyes 10. These eyes are adapted to extend between the perforated ears 88 on each side and have perforations which register with the perforations in the ears 88. 'A guard 11 is U-shaped, the arms of the guard 'extending along the sides of the ears 8-8. The guard has perfora-.
tions which are adapted to register with the perforations in the ears 8- 8; Pins 11, preferably removable pins, extend through the perforations in the guard,' ears and eyes, thus locking the block sides, guard and shackle together. This makes a very compact and yet a very simple and very strong construction. If it is desired to open the shackle, the pin on the closed side of the guard may be withdrawn when the loop of the guard will retain the block side in lace.
here high speed cables are used difiiculty is experienced in their fouling with the pulley block. The block sides have the I cheeks 13-13 forming guides for the pulley block. These are provided with the annular ribs 14L14 extending from the periphery of the pulley. I also have the upward extensions 15 in the upper edge of the cheeks 13 forming slots 16 into which the ard extends. The projections 15 overlapplng in this way the guard prevent the fouling of the cable in the corner between the guard and the cheeks 13.
What I claim as new is 1. In a pulley block, the combination of a sheave; block sides between which the sheave is journaled, said block sides having cheeks extending thereon and upwardly extending ribs terminating in perforate/61' ears above the cheeks; a shackle loop termlnating 1n eyes arranged between the ears; a U-shaped guard encircling the ears on one of the block sides and extending along the a shackle loop terminating in eyes arranged between the ears; a U-shaped guard encir- -85 cling the ears on one of the block sides and extending along the sides of the ears on both block sides and downwardly said slots in the cheeks and having perforations registering with the perforations in the ears;
and pins extending through the guard, ears and shackle.
. 3. In a pulley block, the combination of a sheave; block sides between which the sheave is journaled, said'block sides having cheeks extending thereon and upwardly extending ribs terminating in perforated-ears" above the cheeks, the cheeks h'avin downwardly extending slots adjacent to t re ears a shackle loop terminating in eyes arranged between the .ears; guard plates along the In testimony whereof I have hereunto set i sides of the earsand extending downwardly my hand in the presence of two subscribing into the slots'in the cheeks, said guard plates witnesses. having perforations registering with the BERT C. BALL. g perforations in said. ears; and pins extend- Witnesses:
ing through said guard plates; ears and HOMER V. CARPENTER, shackle; ,J. F. BRUENING.
