Specification of Letters Patent.
WRENCH.
Patented July 6, 1915 Application filed November 22, 1912. Serial No. 732,911.
To all whom it may conccrnr Be it known that I, RAYMOND M. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residingat Potosi, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented cert-am new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Wrenches with special references to those that are quickly adjustable and the object is to provide a Wrench that is quickly adjusted to grasp nuts, pipes or bodies of varying and widely different sizes and which is-easily adjusted and can be manufactured at comparatively small cost.
It will be fully shown in the following specification and illustrated in the drawing, the manner of construction and-mode of operation.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one side of my wrench when open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the wrench from the opposite side of Fig. 1. F ig. 3 is aperspective View of the wrench when open. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the movable jaw removed. Fig. 5 is a cross section of the stud that pivots the two handles together.
Like letters of references denote corresponding parts in all the figures. I
Referring to the drawings 2 represents one of the jaws which is permanently attached to a handle 4. In the handle 4"is a slot 5 in which is pivoted a movable jaw 6 by the pivot pin 8. This movable jaw, shown in Fig. 4, is recessed at 10 and provided with an opening 12 in which opening is'pivoted a lever arm 14 by the pivot pin 15, To said lever arm is-rigidly secured a pin 16 of V shape adapted to' travel in a slot'18 in the handle 4 of the jaw 2. The slot 18 is .also provided with notches 22 which are adapted to be engaged by the pin 16 of the handle 14. As the pin 16 is of V shape with rounded back and rigidly fixed to the lever 14, as shown in Fig. 5, it will readily engage the V-shapecl notches in the slot 18 and will not slip or become disengaged when the jaws are in engagement with a nut or otherarticle. This jaw 6 is also provided with teeth 20 which preferably turn toward the outer edge of the It will be seen that when the lever 14 is raisedand opens the jaw 6 that the'jaw being closed, will force the jaw 6 toward the fixed jaw with one end of the arc'of a circle.
For the purpose of cutting off wire and the like there is provided in the handle 4 of the 2 a rectangular notch 24 which is adapted to be engaged by the head of the lever L4- and cuts oil thewire.
In the operation of the wrench the movable jaw is adjusted to the size of the nut, pipe or other article to be operated upon, by moving the lever 14 up or down with the pin 16 in the slot18, and at the same time the pivot S of the movable jaw will be moved up or down inthe, slot 5. WVhen the adjustment is complete the V shaped part of the pin 16 will be in engagement between two of the teeth 22. Then the operator as he closes the lever 14 forces the movable jaw 6 against the nut and, since one end of the jaw acts in the arc of a circle it will grasp rigidly the nut and crowd it toward the throat of the jaws.
It will be seen that the adjustment can be made very quickly and since the teeth 22 in the slot 18 are near to each other, the adjustment can bemade very accurately, also since the various parts can be cast, the wrench can be made at small cost.
Having now described my invention what I claim is the jaw moving in In a wrench of the character described, a
handle having a jaw formed integrally therewith, and provided with a plurality of longitudinally disposed slots, one of said slots having a smooth inner surface and the other slot being provided with a series of notches on one of its inner surfaces, a movablejaw 'movable jaw and provided with a pin rigidly secured thereto, said pin adapted totravel in the slot provided withthe notches and engage the notches of said slot, said lever adapted to operate the. movable jaw with one end of the jaw traveling in the arc v of a circle toward and from the fixed jaw, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RAYMOND M, KELLY.
