Description

JOHN ORPHY.
Improvement in Lanterns.
N 114,47. Patented May 2,1875) lZyJ.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
JOHN ORPHY, 0F BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HORACE PARMELEE AND WILLIAM H. BONNELL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS. V
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,471, dated May 2, 1871.
I, JOHN ORPHY, of the city of Bufi'alo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement relates to the manner of connecting the vertical wires of the guard or frame which surrounds the glass globe of a lantern with the wire forming the upper ring of the guard.
The invention consists in the connection, between these vertical wires and the upper ring, of the guard formed by reducing the size of the end of the'vertical wires by shearing off a portion from. one side, and then bending this sheared portion around the ring and securing it in place by solder.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I represents an elevation of the wire guard of a lantern detached. Fig. II is a view of the upper end of one of the vertical wires after it has been sheared ofi, preparatory to bending it around the guard-ring. Fig. III is a cross-section of the guard-ring, showing a vertical wire attached thereto after my improved method.
Like letters refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the wire forming the upper ring of the guard-frame, and B B the vertical wires which connect therewith.
b is the end of the wire B after it has been reduced by shearing, and b the same after it has been bent around the guard-ring.
By shearing the end of the wires B a flat bearing-surface is brought in contact with the ring as the wire is bent around the latter, when, by the application of a little solder, a firm connection is made, and one which presents a neat appearance, with comparatively but little enlargement of the guard-ring at the point of junction.
I claim as my invention- The connection and arrangement of the vertical wires B B and upper ring, A, of a guardframe of a lantern, when formed by first reducin g the end of the vertical wires by shear in g, and then bending this reduced end around the wire A and soldering it in place, as here inbeforc set forth.
JOHN ORPHY.
