PROTECTING-TIP FOB DROP-WIRE-BAR ENDS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THoMAs F. BRAZEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Protecting-Tips for Drop-VVire-Bar Ends, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to means for facilitating the assembling of drop wires upon the drop wire bars of looms, and for protecting said drop wires from. injury as they are hurriedly thrust over the recessed ends of said bars.

As is well known in the art each warp end of the loom normally supports a drop wire which when the warp end breaks falls into the path of the vibrating or reciprocating feeler which being arrested thereby initiates the action of suitable stop mechanism for the loom.

The drop wires are slotted near their upper ends and supported upon a suitable drop wire bar which is ordinarily provided at one end with a longitudinal slot and at the opposite end with a transverse slot or recess, said slots being adapted to receive suitable screw threaded pins or bolts extending from brackets carried by the loom frame the pins being provided with thumb nuts to clamp the drop wire bars upon a supporting bracket.

In order to assemble the drop wires on the bar the thumb nuts are loosened and the bar pivotally moved about the pin which enters the longitudinal slot until the transverse slot in the opposite end is disengaged from its pin, whereupon the drop wires are thrust over the other end of the bar. In sliding the drop wires upon the bar they frequently engage the edges of the walls of the recess or the sharp edges of the end of the bar and in being forced over the same become bent or injured so that they do not perform their functions properly.

ment and thereby to prevent injury to the drop wires.

Another object of the invention is to provide a tapered protecting and guiding means for the recessed end of the drop wire bar adapted to enter readily into the slots in the drop wireswhereby the latter may be assembled upon the bar without the necessity of carefully positioning the drop wires as they are passed over the end of said bar.

Other objects of the invention and the nature thereof will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the annexed claims. 7

In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of the drop wire bar and a few of the drop wires of a loom, illustrating the manner in which the same are supported in the loom, the central portion of the illustration being broken away, Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of a drop wire showing the manner in which it is mounted upon the drop wire bar, Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of one of the recessed ends of a drop wire bar with the guiding and protecting device applied thereto, Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the guiding and protecting tip.

The warp stop motion mechanism for looms is usually supported, as shown in Fig. 1, upon arms 1, extending upwardly and inwardly from the side frames of the loom, said arms being provided at their upper ends with laterally bent portions 2 to which brackets 3 are attached, said brackets being provided with upwardly projecting stands 4:, having upstanding flanges 5 provided with screw threaded pins or bolts 6 adapted to receive the slotted ends of a drop wire bar 7 which are securely clamped against said flanges 5, preferably by thumb nuts 8.

The brackets 3 have downward extensions 9 provided with bosses 10 at their lower ends in which the feeler shaft 11 is suitably mounted. The usual stop motion girts 12 are secured in any suitable manner as by screws or bolts 13 to the sides of the depending arms 9 of said bracket.

' The feeler mechanism may be of any usual character and is not illustrated herein as it forms no part of the present invention.

The ends of the drop wire bar usually have relatively sharp edges and the recesses or slots adjacent to the ends are usually tormed by punching so that there are sharp or ragged edges about the'walllsof such recesses. If in slipping the drop wires over the ends of the drop wire bar the opera tor is not careful he is likely to cause the narpw sides of the drop wires to engage the sharp edges of said ends, or the walls of the recess, and by forcing the drop wire thereover to distort, crack or break the drop wire so that'it will not perform its function in the loom properly.

The present invention comprises broadly the providing of means for covering or inclosing the ends of the drop wire bars and recess therein, or both, in such a manner as to prevent engagement of the drop wires with the sharp edges thereof, it also comprehends a guiding means whereby the drop wires may be more quickly assembled upon the drop wire bar than in the ordinary man ner.

In the preferred form of invention illustrated herein this means comprises a hollow tapered tip 20 as illustrated in Figs; 3 and 4:, the body portion 21 being hollow and substantially rectangular in form to pass over and fit the end of the drop -wirebar and to inclose the slot 15 therein, so that the drop wires cannot engage the end, enter the slot, or engage the walls thereof.

The outer end of the tip 20 is desirably provided with converging edges 22, 23. and the sides of the point of the tip are also desirably made converging so that; the extremity 24 is relatively small. 1

When the drop wires are to-be assembled upon the drop wire bars the removable tip large numbers of drop wires necessary for each loom. It will also be observed that the protecting tip prevents the engagement of the'drop wires with any sharp edge orwith the walls of the recess so that they will not be likely to become distorted or broken in being slipped onto the drop wire bar.

While the device illustrated herein'is the preferred-form of the invention it will be obvious that it may be made in various other forms and my invention comprehends any form whereby the drop wire may be guided uponthe drop wire bar and any means by which it may be prevented fromengaging the sharp edges of the ends of the bar or the walls of the slot or recess in. said end.

' Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination with warp stop. mechanism for looms comprising a drop wire bar having a recessed end by means of which it is detachablv supported in the loom, a re movable guiding member adapted to cover said recess to prevent engagement of the drop wires therewith when being assembled upon said bar.

2. In combination with warp stop mechanism for looms comprising a drop wire bar having a recessed end by means of which it is supported in the loom. a hollow removable guiding member adapted to inclose the end of said bar and. to cover the walls of said recess-whereby iniuryto the drop wires will be prevented as the same are being assembled upon the drop wire bar.

3. A removable guide tip for the drop wirev bar of a loom comprising a member having a tapered end and a hollow base adapted to inclose the recessed end ofthe bar to prevent injury to the drop wires when being assembled thereon.

4:- A- removable guide tip for the drop wire bar of a loom comprising a metallic member having a flat tapered end portion anda hollow base and adapted to inclose and cover the recessed end of the bar to prevent injury to the drop wireswhen being assembled thereon.
