FINGERS.
To all whom imam concern! I Be it known that 1, Louis M. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly,;in the'county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Pincers, of which the following description, in connection with the, accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference, characters on the drawings indicatinglike parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to hand lasting pincers employed in the manufacture of boots and shoes for stretching and drawing the upper over the shoe bottom preliminary to fastening the same to the sole.
The type of hand lasting pincers in use at the present time has secured to the under side of the lower jaw of the pincers a ham mer head or fulcrum which, when the pincers are closed upon the marginal edge of the upper, may rest upon the! shoe bottom and provide a fulcrum upon which the pincers may be. rocked or turned in drawing and stretching the upper to place, and which may also serve as a hammer for driving tacks to hold the upper under tension. The work engaging face of this hammer head, which is usually roughened to prevent it from slipping on the work, makes changing angles with the sole as the pincers are rocked and the edge of said face cuts into or indents and otherwise injures the surface of thework engaged during the manipulation of the pincer to draw the upper about the last. When such hand lasting pincers are used in making stitch-down shoes, where the tread surface of the out-sole is engaged by the fulcrum, the injuries to the surface of the work resulting from the pressure of the fulcrum are particularly objectionable and almost impossible to eliminate.
The present invention aims to provide lasting pincers with means so constructed that the pincers may, without injuring the surface of the work, be turned and twisted on the shoe bottom in all directions when drawing and tensioning the upper about the last.
The several features of the invention will now be described in connection with the drawings illustrative thereof and will then be pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of a lasting pincer embodying the present. invention. Fig. is a side elevation I Specification of Letters Patent:
Application filed October 2, 191 1. Serial No. 864,617.
showing the pincer in use. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the illustrated embodiment, of the present invention the. pincer jaws and their handles are of substantially the same construction as heretofore used, the same comprising a pair of cooperating curved jaws 2 and Spivoted at 5 and provided with the rearwardly extending handle members 8 and 9 which are adapted to be grasped by one hand of the operator.
; In order that sufficient strain and tension may beapplied to the upper to properly position it about the last, one of the jaws is provided with a fulcrum about which the pincers are used as a lever, this fulcrum being constructed preferably so that the portion thereof which engages the work offers a firm and relatively stationary hearing during the manipulation of the pincers. As herein shown the fulcrum comprises a work engaging foot or button 12 having an upwardly extending stud 13 the upper end of which terminates ,in a spherical knob 15 and is received in a corresponding socket 16 provided in the lower end of a boss 19 depending from the under side of the lower jaw 3 and adjacent to the outer end thereof, the foot 12 being held in the socket in the boss 16 by a clamping plate 22 which is secured to the boss by a screw 23. The actual fulcrum point upon which the pincer turns is located at a definite point in the center of the knob 15 instead of being at a variable point of contact between some portion of the face of a fulcrum member and the sole while the pincer is being rocked. A hammer head 25 is provided on the upper jaw 2 of the pincers for driving tacks after the upper has been drawn about the last. I
From the construction described it will be apparent that the invention provides a fulcrum which permits the lasting pincers to be turned and twisted universally or in all necessary directions for tensioning the upper from over a large area of the shoe while the fulcrum member continues to bear squarely upon the work, that is. without any change in the angular relation of the face of the fulcrum member to the work, thereby prein Fig. 2, since the work engaging face of the foot 12 which bears upon the outer surface of the outsole remains substantially' stationary relatively thereto during the twisting and turning of the pincers about the ball 15 as a pivot so that the surface of the outsole is not indented or injured and may be easily buffed and finished in the usual manner without such loss of time in claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Hand lasting pincers comprising, in combination, cooperating jawspivoted together, means for opening and closing said jaws, and work engaging means operatively connected to one of said jaws and relatively to which said jaws are universally movable.
-2. Hand lasting pincers comprising, in combination, cooperating upper and lower handles for opening and closing said jaws,
a foot for engaging the work, and a ball and socket connection between said foot and said lower jaw to enable the pincers to be turned and twisted in all directions.
3. Hand lasting pincers comprising, in combination, cooperating jaws pivoted together, means for opening and closing said jaws, a work engaging foot upon which the pincers are fulcrumed, and a ball and socket connection between said jaws and said foot and arranged with the center of motion substantially above the work engaging face of said foot. I
In'testimony whereof I have signed my' name to this specification in the presence of twosubscribing witnesses V g I LOUIS BROWN.
