Description

R. NAGLE.
LASTING JACK.
Patented May 12,1891.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES -PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD NAGLE, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
LASTING-JACIK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,146, dated May 12, 1891.
Application filed January 27, 1891. Serial No. 379,266- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD NAGLE, of Lynn, in the county of Essex. State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Last-ing- Jacks, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lasting- .jack, showing my improved clamp in position for use, the standard of the jack being represented as broken off; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same enlarged, taken on line 00 0c in Fig. 1; and Figs. 3 and 4,elevations of the clamp-heads detached.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to a clamp which is adapted to be adjustably mounted on a lasting-jack 'head and is designed to clamp or hold the shank portion of a boot or shoe upper onto the sole during the process of lasting; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the jack considered as a whole, said jack beingof the ordinary form and construction, provided with a sliding toe-piece h and hinged heel-piece (I, mounted on a head or bar g, fitted to rotate on the standard h.
The clamp 13 consists of a body portion 2', having an opening j, whereby it is fitted to slide longitudinally on the head g, and is secured in position thereon by a set-screw 71-. The bodyi is extended laterally at each side, forming ears or lugs m, to each of which a vertically-arranged arm 1) is hinged or pivoted.
A rod q is hinged at 4* to one arm 13 and projects through a slot 25 in the opposite arm 19. Theouterend of said rod is screw-threaded at r, and a nut 10 is turned thereon. Hinged to said nut there is a lever 1 provided with a cam-head .2, which engages the slotted arm 1), and when depressed into the horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, tends to force said arms 1) toward each other.
To the upper end of each arm 29 an eccentric head 15 is pivoted by screws 16 so as to swing on said arm. Said heads are provided with openings 17 for the screws 16, whereby they may be adjusted vertically on said arms. The upper or free ends of the heads have a flexible guard or padding 1S thereon to prevent them from cutting or injuring the leather.
In the use of my improvement the clamp is adjusted in any desired position on the head g by means of its set-screwk. The last 0 is disposed on the jack in the usual manner with the upper in position thereon. The clamp-heads 15 are swung from the arms 1), so that their padded edges 18 shall take on the last in the shank portion at the rear of the ball, as shown in Fig. 1. By depressing the cam-lever 1 the arms 2) are drawn together and the heads 15 forced tightly against the last, gathering and holding the upper in the shank portion, when it may be readily tacked to the sole.
This device avoids the necessity of employing the pinchers to gather the upper in the shank portion and prevents the material from being torn thereby, as frequently happens where pinchers are used.
I preferably employ rubber or similar material for the padding 18 on the heads 15, as greater friction is imparted thereby on the leather, causing it to be drawn more smoothly and tightly over the instep. The process of lasting is greatly quickcned by the use of my clamp, and the danger of longitudinal pull on the upper, whereby the shoe is frequently misshapen, is avoided.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is In a clamp for lasting-jacks, the combina tion, with the body mounted on the jackhead, arms hinged to the sides of the body, through said arms and through one of the and a lever having a cam-head for pressing openings in each head, substantially as desaid arms simultaneously inward, of eocenscribed. trie clamp-heads, each provided with a num- RICIIARD NAGLE. 5 ber of openings and having an inwardly-bent Vitnesses:
upper end covered with a guard or padding 0. M. SHAW, of soft rubber, and screws passing outwardly K. DURFEE.
