BOSOM-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915.
Application filed September 29, 1913. Serial No. 792,382.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, LADBRooK H. FREE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bosom-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to bosom boards and particularly to stretching devices for use on such boards;
More specifically the invention relates to a stretcher for stretching the forward skirt portion of a shirt over a bosom board.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an ironing press provided with my improved stretcher; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device; Fig. 3 is a plan view; Fig. 4 is an end elevation with the jaws open; and Fig. 5 is a similar view with the jaws closed.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of parts may be employed so long as they possess the necessary characteristics, but I have shown one arrangement in the drawings which is effective in operation, and in such embodiment 1 represents the main frame of the machine which is provided with a suitable ironing board support 2 upon which is mounted an ironing board 3 of any desired form. This ironing board 3 in this instance is provided with a yoke ironing member 4, a yoke ironer 5, and upon its upper surface near the yoke ironer with a neck band former 6. Cooperating with the ironing board and neck band former is an ironing chest 7, which is supported on suitable arms 8 mounted on brackets 9 se cured to the main frame. The ironing chest 7 is operated through the link 10, operating arms 11, and links 12 connected on either side of a driving gear 13. This mechanism is not fully or completely shown for the reason that it forms no part of the invention but merely illustrates one type of machine to which the device may be applied. Mechanism is also provided for stretching the bosom over the ironing board, and it comprises a bracket 14 secured to the front face of the ironing board support 2 as shown in Fig. 1. This bracket 14 has outwardly extending bearing portions 15 and 16, the portion 16 being long enough to extend to a point at one side of the ironing board and there provided with a friction disk 17, for a purpose to be described. The inner face of the bearing 15 is provided with a pin 18 for a purpose to be described. Rotatably mounted in these bearings 15 and 16 is a shaft 19 having keyed to it between the two bearings a mutilated gear 20 which meshes with another mutilated gear 21 mounted upon a shaft 22 pivoted in a bearing 23 forming a part of a stretcher bracket 24 provided with a bifurcated bearing portion 25 loosely mounted upon the shaft 19. The stretching bracket is provided with a recessed stretcher portion 26 arranged transversely with respect to the ironing board and extending across the front, as shown in Fig. 1. Cooperating with this member is a clamping roller 27 covered with rubber and mounted in a frame 28 which extends about the bracket 24 and to the rear thereof and is swiveled by means of a suitable bearing 29 upon the shaft 19. This frame 28 is pro vided with a cam portion 30 adapted to cooperate with a cam 31 secured on the end of the shaft 22. A spring 32 is arranged between the bracket 24 and the stationary bracket 14 and normally tends to draw the bracket 24 inward toward the end of the ironing board and this inward movement is limited by a shoulder 33 forming a part of the bracket and engaging the pin 18. The shaft 19 is manipulated by a suitable lever 34 keyed to the shaft and having a boss 35 provided with a threaded opening in radial alinement with the periphery of the disk 17. Threaded in the opening of the boss 35 is a rod 36 provided with a hand grip 37 at its upper and with a shoe 38 at its lower end for engagement upon the periphery of the friction disk 17. The arrangement of this mechanism is such that when the shirt is be ing placed upon the machine the forward skirt portion is drawn down over the transverse member 26, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 4. The operator then rotates the rod 36 to release the shoe 38 from engagement with the friction disk and pulls forward upon this rod with the result that the lever 34 is rocked in a counter clockwise direction, causing the shaft 19 to be rotated, and likewise the gear 20. The rotation of the gear 20, however, rotates the gear 21 in a clockwise direction, causing the cam 31 to engage the cam portion 30 of the frame 28, causing the roller 27 to be brought up snugly against the transverse stretching member 26 of the bracket 24. When this clamping operation has taken place, the further forward movement of the rod 36 of the lever 3 L causes the frame 28 as well as the bracket 24: to be moved forward or tobe rocked in a counter clockwise direction, with the result that the bosom is stretched over the ironing board. Upon the rotation of the rod'36 by means of the hand grip 37, the parts are locked in this position by the engagement 'of the friction shoe 38 with the periphery of the friction disk. To release the device, the operator rotates the rod 36 to withdrawthe shoe 38 the parts are returned to normal position, the clamp being opened by the extreme forward movement of these parts.
Having, described my inventlon, I claim 1. In a bosom board structure, a bosom board, means for holding'the shirt at the neck, and a bosom stretcher comprising a clamp, a single element for opening and closing the clamp and for moving it in the stretching and releasing operation.
2. In a bosom board structure, a bosom board, means for holding the shirt at the neck, and a bosom stretcher comprising a clamp mounted to move bodily, a single op erating element, connections between said element and the clamp to cause it to move into clamping position, connections .between said operating element and the clamp for moving it bodily, and means for holding said member in any adjusted position.
