duidt %itte5 JEREMIAH T. CARPENTER, OF DOWNINGTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 114,407, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORPSE-PRESERVERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J EREMIA T. CARPENTER, of Downingtown, in the county of Chester and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference' marked thereon making a part of this specification. The nature' of my invention consists in the ar Arangement of a corpse-preserver, hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art tol which my invention appertains ,to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- .y
Figure lis a longitudinal vertical section of the entire corpse-preserver;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the cooling-board;'
Figure 3 is a plan view of the bottom without the( cooling-board; and
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section of the icebox above the corpse.
A represents the bottom of the corpse-preserver, said bottom being in the shape of a shallow boxthat is, provided with low sides, so as to form a box for the receptionof ice.
In the upper surface of the bottom A are grooves,- a a and a hole, b, through thebottom for the water to pass out.
On top of and covering the bottom A, so as to leave a suitable space between them for ice, is the coolingboard B, onsisting of a woodemframe covered with.
a slightly concave metallic plate.
At one end of this board is the head-rest, C, made adjustable up and down, and at'the other end is a movablel foot-rest, D. l
E represents the body of the corpse-preserver, having a movable lid, G, with a glass-plate, d, directly above the head-rest, so that the face of the corpse can be seen while on ice.
The center lidH of the body E is inthe shape of a raised box, as shown in fig. 1, andthe Ii`d I over the foot is stationary on the body.
Under the center lid His placed the metallic icebox J, the bottom of which is convex, forminga concavity on the under side to fit the body placed upon the cooling-board. The sides of the box J extend beyond the ends, as shown in iig. 1, and have a series of holes, so that a rod can be passed across at each end to'support the ice-box by said rodson the edges of the body E, and thus adjust it as may be required, according to the size of the corpse.
rations in the edges of the bottom thereof into gutters c e, formed underneath, and then drops into funnels ff, on the cooling-board, from whence it passes into the grooves a a in the-bottom A.
The ice-box J is provided with handles h 71., and the cooling-board is also furnished with the same, marked On top of the cooling-board B, as well ason the underside of the bottom of the ice-box J, is attached gum or oil-cloth, t, for the purpose of keeping the corpse dry.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
rIhe within-described corpse-preserver, composed of the grooved shallow bottom A, having inner supports, upon which is placed the movable cooling-board B` having headv and foot-rests, and extending above the sides of the bottom, around which extends the body E, provided with the covers G H 1, the various parts being constructed substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of March, 1871.
JEREMIAH T. CARPENTER.
