PIPE-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915..
Application filed April 4, 1914. Serial No. 829,626.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. Voror, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlestown, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Jack, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in pipe jacks, one object of the invention being the provision of means having a reciprocatory pipe gripping and guiding member manually controllable, the forward movement of which in combination with the pipe to be driven causes the gripping of the pipe, while the retractive action causes the release of the pipe. 7
A further object of the present invention, is the provision of a pipe ack in which the parts are readily assembled and positioned for use, and which is durable and compact in construction.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete jack showing the position it assumes when in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation taken from the gripping end of the jack with the handles removed. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the bifurcated end of the operating lever.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base and the supporting member of the jack, which is provided with the apertured lugs or bosses 2 which receive the driven elements E which in the present device may be held in the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 when operating upon the pipe P. The member 1 is provided with the two upstanding walls 3 constructed in the form of a channeled and guiding means, the upper inturned ends 4 constituting tongues for engagement with the grooves 5 of the reciprocatory pipe guiding and driving member 6. A. longitudinal bore 7 is formed through the member 6 for thereception of the pipe P, so that the pipe may be inserted from the rear of the member 6 to be driven into the breast of the earth, as clearly illustrated. At the forward end of the member 6 centrally thereof, adjacent the bore 7 is provided the projecting lip 8 which is vertically disposed and is so constructed as to form the two recessed portions 9 which have disposed concentrically therein, to be carried by the member 6, the two pins 10, which constitute the axes for the swingingly mounted pipe gripping members 11, each one of which is provided with the biting end 12. By this means as a retractive movement is imparted to the head 6, the biting ends 12 become automatically disengaged from the pipe 2, while when moved forward, the biting ends grip the same and thus cause the pipe to be moved with the head 6 into the breast.
In order to provide a means for properly operating the member 6, two oppositely disposed pins 13 are carried by the supporting member 1 for the reception of the terminals 14 of the two links 15, the upper terminals of said links being pivotally connected to the pin 16 carried by the operating lever or handle 17. The lower end of the lever or handle is bifurcated as at 18 for insertion within the elongated openings 19 of the re duced end 20 of the head or member 6, the bifurcations 18 permitting the pipe P to be extended therethrough according to the length thereof.
In operation, the pipe P is inserted through the bore 7 from the handle end of the present jack, and in ready position to be gripped by the biting terminals 12 of the members 11. It will thus be seen with this structure that by the reciprocation of the head 6, that the pipe will be alternately gripped and released, it being the intention to grip the same a short distance from the breast of the earth, so that great power may be exerted thereon without bending or injuring the pipe.
What is claimed is:
A pipe jack, comprising a base plate having two upstanding walls, said walls being provided with parallel and alined tongues, a block provided with alined grooves mounted within the walls of the base plate with the grooves engaging the tongues, whereby the block is permitted reciprocatory movement relatively to the base plate. said block being providedwith a longitudinally disposed pipe receiving bore extending there through, two cylindrical recesses formed in the forward edge of the block one upon each side of the bore, two pipe engaging members each' having a biting end and a cylindrical portion mounted within the last recesses with the pipe engaging portions disposed toward each other for engagement With the pipe when mounted Within the bore of the block, two links pivotally connected to and exteriorly of the base plate and extending upwardly above the reciprocatory block, a reduced apertured portion extending from the rear of the block, and a lever having a GEORGE F. VOIGT.
