Be it known that I, RICHARD J. WHIT- TAKER, ay citizen of the United States of America, a resident of the city of St. -Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certa1n` new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de@ scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a bed, one of the objects being to produce a convertible bed structure adapted for use as a low cradle or swing, and adapted to be adjusted to form a comparatively high rigid -bed structure.

Another object is to produce a low childs bed adapted to be placed under a larger bed, and constructed so that it may be elevated to lie substantially Hush with the larger bed.

The preferred form of my invention comprises a low cradle structure including a support, a bed frame, and hangers connecting said bed frame to said support. The hangers are adapted to extend downwardly from the points at which they are connected to the bed frame, and in this-event the low bed frame may be rocked like a swing or cradle. Or, if desired, the bed frame may be'elevated to form a comparatively high bed, and the hangers, which then extend upwardly from the support, may be rigidly secured in position to retain the bed frame in fits elevated position.

Figure I is a top or plan view of a bed embodying the features of my invention. Fig. II is a side elevation. Fig. III is an end elevation. Fig. IV is a detail view showing one of the hangers elevated to a position from which it may be dropped and 'interlocked with a corner post.

In the accompanying drawings: A designates a base, preferably consisting of a rectangular frame mounted on casters and provided with corner posts 2.

B is a bed bottom preferably consisting of side bars 3 and a fabric structure 4 yieldingly connected to said side bars. The bed frame I have shown also includes a railing 4 extending around three sides of the bed bottom, and a gate 6 at the remainin side. The gate I have shown is provided wit eyes 6 slidably fitted to vertical guide rods 7 at the ends of the bed railing, and adapted to be held in its elevated position, shown in Fig. II, by means of fastening devices 8.` The fastening devices may be constructed in any suitable manner, for example the members 8 may be movably fitted to the frame and provided with hook shaped outer ends adapted to engage the lower portion of the gate. The bed frame consisting of the bed bottom B and the railing 4, is connected to the corner posts 2 by means of hangers 9 pivoted at their lower ends to the bed frame and pivoted at their upper ends to the upper portions of the corner posts.

When the parts are positioned as shown in Figs. I and II, and in full lines Fig. III, the bed frame is suspended bv the hangers 9, and it may be rocked or oscillated like a cradle. The preferred form of the invention is more particularly intended to be used as a childs bed, and it may be so constructed that it will pass under the side rails and springs of a full size bed when the hangers 9 are positioned as seen in Fig. II. The

bed or cradle may be thus moved out of the i way when it is not in service.

The hangers 9 and corner posts 2 are so constructed that the bed frame and hangers may be elevated to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. III, and the hangers may be automatically rigidly secured to this position to form rigid supports for the bed frame. The pivot pins 10, connecting the hangers to the corner posts, are arranged in slots 11 in the corner posts and each hanger is provided with a locking pin 12 adapted to enter a notch 13 in the upper end of a corner post when the hanger occupies the position shown in Fig. IV. In converting the structure from a low cradle to a comparatively high rigid bed, the bed frame and hangers are shifted as indicated by arrows in Fig. III and the hangers are positioned as shown in Fig. IV to locate the pivot pins 10 in the upper ends of slots 11, and to position the locking pins l2 directly above the notches 13. The hangers and bed frame are then moved downwardly a lslight distance to locate the locking pins 12 in the notches 13, thereby securely and automatically interlocking the hangers with the corner'posts. The rigid hangers then extend upwardly from the corner posts, and the bed frame, secured to the upper ends of the hangers, is located where it is accessible to a person occupying a full size bed.
