To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HOWARD G. FURMAN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Marsland, in the county of Dawes, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ll ire-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to wire stretchors.

An object of the invention is to provide adevice for stretching wire such that will maintain the wire in its adjusted or stretched position during the splicing of the wire together.

A further object of the invention is. to

provide a device that will facilitate the at taching of a wire to a fence post.

,VVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to the drawing by reference characters wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views, my device comprises a body member 1 of flat metal having a series of notches 2 formed on the edges thereof. Fixedly mounted on one end of the bar is an enlargement 3 which is formed of a downwardly projecting fiat web 4 and ears 5 which are bent around the bar and hold On the lower end of this web 4 is attached by a link 6 a wire holding device 7 which comprises a substantially conical body member 7 having a collar 8 of C formation thereon so that Wire may be inserted between the said collar and the body member 7 through the opening in the C when the said link is in a position adjacent the apex of the cone.

the link 6 is a chain 9 having a hook on for gripping the wire.

The collar can then be rotated and the opening therein the end thereof so that the said collar can be looped about the post and secured thereto by the engagement of the hook 10 withinone of the links of the chain. On the other end of the body member 1 is fixedly mounc ed a downwardly extending projection 11.

A chain 12 is attached to the end of the body member 1, and on the end of this chainis secured a member 13 of a form similar to the member 7 attached to the link 6 Attached to the lower end of the member 11 is a rod 13 which extends upwardly at an angle to the body member 1 and through a hole in the same and thence parallel to the upper face of ,the said body member 1 to a point adj acent the inner end of the web 4 and thence downwardly through the hole in the body member 1 and at an angle thereto, and is attached at its end to the web 4 atthe lower forward portion thereof. This rod .is secured to the body portion for the purpose of strengthening the same, and by theuse thereof the said body portion may be made of comparatively light material.

Slidably mounted on the body member 1 v r is an adjusting member 14 which comprises a downwardly extending web15 of a form similar to the web 4 of the member A pair of upwardly extending ears 16 are secured to one end of this member 14 and embrace the body member in such manner as to allow the said member to slide thereon. ()n the inner end of the member 14 is formed a collar 17 which encircles the body member 1 and is slidable thereon with the web 15. Pivoted to this collar is a lever 18 which has a pair of pawls 19 pivoted thereto which are adapted to engage any one of the notches 2 during the adjustment of the device. the lowermost portion of the web 15 is secured a wire gripping member 20 of a form similar to the form of wire gripping mem-. ber 7. I In operatiomassuming that it is ,desirable to join together the ends of a wire that has become broken when stretched upon a fence, one end of the said wire is engaged by the wire gripping member 7 in the manner set forth and the other end of the wire is gripped by the member 20, the lever 18 is then operated to pull the wire which is attached to the gripping member 20 toward the other, piece of wire by'the alternate engagement of the'pawls 19. with the notches 2, which by the operation of the lever causes the member 14 to slide upon the bodyportion 1 of the device and toward the end to which the member 3 is attached.

When it is desired to obtain a new grip on the wire it is only necessary that the gripping member 13 be attached to the wire and then the member 20 released, the pawls may then be readily disengaged from the notches 2 and the member 14; moved to its initial position, when the gripping member 20 is then again engaged on the wire and the member 13 released. By repeating this operation the wire may be stretched to the desired point and during each movement of the stretching member may be held against retrograde movement by the clamping member 13.

l/Vhen it is desired to stretch a piece of wire toward a fence post to be attached thereto or to be attached to a piece of wire which is secured to the said post, the chain 9 is Wrapped around the post and secured thereto by the engagement of the hook 10 with one of the links of the chain and the member 1 1- may then be operated by the lever 18 to draw the wire toward the said post after the said wire has been attached to the gripping member 20, the stretching of the wire is then accomplished in a manner similar to the manner above described.

From the foregoing description it may be seen that I have provided a device which will effectually stretch the broken portions of a Wire which are secured upon a fence toward each other so that they may be spliced together, and I have further provided a device which will stretch the said wire by a step by step operation, and I have still further provided means on the said device which will hold the piece stretched against any retrograde movement during I do not wish to be limited by the pillticular construction of my invention shown, for it is obvious that numerous-changes may be made within the scope of the invention as defined by the claim.

What is claimed is In a device of the class described, a body portion of flat sheet metal, aweb secured to one end thereof and extending downwardly at right angles thereto, a lug secured to the other end thereof and extending downwardly therefrom, said body portion having apertures adjacent its ends, a rod attached to the said lug and extending upwardly through one of the apertures and along the upper face of the body portion spaced from and parallel thereto and downwardly through the other aperture and attached to the lowermost point of the web member, a chain having a hook on the end thereof attached to said web member, a wire gripping member pivotally attached thereto, a wire stretching member slidably mounted on the body portion comprising a downwardly extending web, a wire gripping member attached thereto, a lever pivotally supported by said member and having pawls thereon for engagement, with the body portion, a chain having a wire gripping member on the end thereof attached to the lug on the end of the body member, as and for the purpose described.
