METALLIC RAILWAY-'rin To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. SLIGK, a citizen of the United States, borough of Westmont, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, (whose vania,) have invented certain new an useful improvements in Metallic Railway- Ties; and l. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description o the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art make and use the same.
My invention relates to a metallic railway tie Jformed of a corrugated or grooved plate with upwardly projecting rail chairsl mountadapted to secure the rail to the chairs.
Certain of the objects of my invention are :t0 provide a tie that will possess all of the necessary qualities for the purpose -intended; to use in the construction thereof material such as will permit a light weight tie to be constructed simply and economcally and at the same time provide a tie which may be easily put in place and the rails readily adjusted thereon.
Another object of mv invention is to provide an insulation between the rail chairs and the cross members of the tie to adopt the tie for Vuse in connection with railway signaling apparatus.
Referring now to the .accompanying drawings in which similar letters of referencei indicate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved metallic. showing railway tie with the rails in place, in this case the insulation between the rail chairs and cross member of the tie; Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1 with the right hand rail and clips shown in dotted lines and with the right hand bolts removed; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line lll-lll of Fig.. 1;
elevation of my improve tie without the insulation between the rail chairs and the cross member of the tie.
The crossmember 1 o l my improved tie is stamped or rolled into a species of corrugated shape which has a depressed longitudinally extending member 2, lateral extending substantiallyflat upper flanges 3 with outwardly and downwardly projecting side members The rail chairs 5 may be or stamping plates into the desired shape, and are eac .provided Specification of Letters'atcnt.
residing in the l Pennsylto which it appertains to- :tion when they Vare Patented l une 8, 1915.
Application filed August 14', 1914. v Serial No. 856,734.'
When it is desired to insulate the railA member of the tie, i
chairs from the cross washers 11 are provided. The insulation strips 12 and 13 are inserted respectively between the flanges 6 and 3 and the flanges 3 and the washer 11. An insulation tube surrounds the portions ofthe rivets or bolts 10 intermediate the flange 6 an washer 1l.
Clips 15 areiformed with a downwardly projecting lug 16 and a rail receiving -groove 17. The lugs 16 are adapted to be received in the slots 18 ofthe rail chairs 5 and are thereby prevented from shifting their'posiplaced in their desired positions with the surfaces of the grooves 17 bearing upon the edges of the ,bottom flanges of the rails 19. The rail chairs 5 and the clips 15 arerrespectively provided with perforations 20 and 21 which are adapted to receive bolts 22. Nuts 23l and lock washers 24C are provided for the bolts 22 and by means of said clips, bolts, nuts and lock washers, the rail 19 may .be securely fastened to the rail chair. The rails chairs which extend longitudinally with thel cross members, and transversely of the rails are open at either end to permit the bolts to be readily inserted and to allow wrenches to be applied without difliculty to the boltsl 22 within the said open ends. Rail chairs that extend longitudinally of the rails and are open at each end, make it necessary to apply the wrenches to the bolts of the railfastening clips' directly below the rails which is very diicult and impracticable. lrliny improved tie I eliminate this disadvantage.
The lower cross member 1 is made of special longitudinally corrugated cross section as showlt. which adds to its stiffness and strength, is further stiffened and strengthened at and near the rail seats by the rail chair 5 which may be made of length and strength sufficient to properly distribute the load to the cross member and thence to the ballast, while the corrugations in .the cross also have rail seat portions 7;.
the
member also serve to prevent it from shifting on the ballast and hold it securely in position thereon.
Although l have shown and described my invention in considerable detail, l do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown and described, but may use such sub- *y the upperportion of the side Ucorrugations 25 thereof. I
3. A metallic railway tie comprising a corrugated plate provided with a central depression and two integral inverted trough v shaped side portions, rail chairs of inverted channel section with laterally extending lower flanges attached to the upper portions ofthe trough shaped'side portions.
4.-. A 1metallic railway tie comprising a plate provided with a central longitudinally extending depressed portion, integral laterally extending upper flanges adjoining the Said depressed portion, outwardly and downwardly projecting portions adjoining the lateral extending flanges, and rail chairs of inverted channel section with laterally ex- A tending lower flanges attached4 to the upper surfaces of the laterally extending flanges.
5. A metallic railway tie comprising a longitudinally corrugated plate, integral Wings projecting laterally therefrom, rail chairs of inverted channel section with laterally extending lower flanges attached to v the said wings, and means for fastening the rails to the rail chairs.
6. A metallic railway cross-tie comprising a tlower plate member, inverted trough shaped rail chairs of inverted channel secinaaare y tion with laterally 'extending lower flanges mounted thereon, and extending longitudinally of the plate member, said chairs being open at each end.
7. A metallic railway cross tie comprising a lower plate member, inverted trough shaped rail chairs of inverted channel section with laterally extending lower flanges extending longitudinally thereof, said chairs being open at each end, insulationinteimediate the rail vchairsvand the plate member' of the tie.
8. A metallic railway tie comprising a longitudinally corrugated plate, rail chairs of inverted channel section with laterally extending lower flanges attached to the upper portions of the side corrugations thereof', said rail chairs extending longitudinally of the plate member of the tie and being open at each end.
9. A metallic railway tie comprising a trough plate section, integral wings projecting laterally therefrom, rail chairs of inverted channel section with laterally extending lower flanges attached to the upper portion of said wings, said rail chairs extending longitudinally of the trough plate and open at each end.v y
l0. A metallic railway tie comprisingV a trough plate section, integral wings projecting'laterally therefrom, rail chairs of invertedchannel section with laterally extending lower flanges attached to the Vupper portion of the said wings, insulation intermediate the rail chairs and the plate section, and
means for fastening the rails to the chairs.
ll. A metallic railway tie comprising a trough plate section, integral wings projecting laterally therefrom, inverted channel rail chairs with laterally projecting lower flanges attached to the upper portion of said wings, clamps and bolts adaptedto fasten the rails to the said chairs, slots in the upper surface of the rail chairs and lugs on the'said clips yadapted to be inserted in said slots.
ln testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. EDWN E, SLCK. llitnesses:
A. Dix Ti'r'rLn, I PLUMA F. LoNGsHoiin.
